Brazilian airliner, small plane reportedly collide
SAO PAULO, Brazil - Brazilian airline Gol said Friday it was trying to locate a passenger plane that disappeared from the radar and failed to arrive at its destination.

The head of Brazil's airports authority, Infraero, said the Gol plane collided with another smaller plane in the Amazon region, the Globo news agency reported.

The smaller plane, an executive jet, was able to land even though it suffered wing damage, Globo reported.

The Gol plane disappeared from radar and has not been located.

4. CNN reporting that the GOL jet was a Boeing 737 with 155 pax/crew.
If so, it must be a B-737-400. I flew the -400 for years, configured for 144 passengers and a crew of 6. Mid-air collision. Bad news.

10. CNN just modified the GOL missing list to 150.
That is totally consistent with a B-737-400.

7. Thanks TI. Not funny to me either.
As a captain for a major US airline (before I retired), I was also an Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA - AFL/CIO) airline accident investigator (ALPA Central Air Safety Committee). I am deeply moved by every airline accident worldwide, because I know the horrendous implications. I also look at every accident as a potential way to enhance flight safety for the rest of us .. the survivors.

As an aviation writer, I continue to analyze airline accidents for several international aviation magazines and I am affiliated with an international airline safety consulting firm. I take nothing about this tragic accident lightly. Nor should anyone. Period.

8. Thank you
for taking your job so seriously. My father almost died in a plane accident in the late 80s.

The airline involved took it very seriously. My father never once blamed the airline. If you want to PM me, that is cool.

Brazil planes collide over Amazon, 155 missing

Fri Sep 29, 2006 10:08 PM ET

By Terry Wade

SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters) - A Brazilian passenger plane with 155 people on board disappeared over the Amazon jungle on Friday after colliding with a small plane, the company and news reports said.

Gol flight 1907, flying from the principle Amazon city of Manaus bound for the national capital Brasilia, disappeared after losing radar contact, the company said.

The head of Brazil's airports authority, Infraero, said the Gol aircraft collided with another smaller plane, Globo news agency reported.

The smaller plane, an executive jet, was able to land in a town called Serra do Cachimbo even though it suffered wing damage, Globo reported. Cachimbo is deep in the jungle about midway between Manaus and Brasilia.

15. NPR just reported that from the way the wreckage looks...
...it looks like the jet crashed vertically into the ground.

The audio isn't at the link yet though:

13. Legacy was piloted by a US citizen
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5394146.stm

Globo news agency says the airliner collided with a smaller, Brazilian-made Legacy aircraft which suffered wing damage before landing in the Cachimbo mountain range in Para state.

The Estado news agency reported that the Legacy was piloted by a US citizen who had taken off from the Sao Jose dos Campos airport near Sao Paulo.

Ramon Bueno, an aviation official in Sao Paulo, told Estado that the mid-air collision was "inexplicable."

Gol, a low-cost airline, has expanded rapidly in recent years to become Brazil's number two carrier. This is the first major crash involving Gol, which was founded in 2001. In a statement Gol confirmed the plane involved was new, having only come into service this month.

14. Wreckage spotted - "very difficult for anyone to survive"
It was found in a remote area of the rural state of Mato Grosso.

"It would be very difficult for anyone to survive such a crash," Jose Carlos Pereira, president of the Brazilian airport authority, told journalists.

"Our experience shows that when one cannot find the fuselage relatively intact and when the wreckage is concentrated in a relatively small area, the chances of finding any survivors are practically non-existent," he said.
...
Troops are attempting to make their way through the densely forested area to the scene of the crash, armed forces spokesman Maj Adolfo Aleixo told Brazilian television.

18. Geez... I know people
who fly exec jets down there, as well as several who could've been on the commercial flight. And, of course, no idea how to get hold of them.

Hoping for the best.
