'Hazed' Frat Member Needed Eardrum, Buttocks Surgery
Fraternity Brothers On Trial

POSTED: 9:05 am EDT September 29, 2006

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The father of a Florida A&M student who accuses fraternity members of beating him said he's not in it for the money.

Five Kappa Alpha Psi brothers are on trial on hazing charges. Master Sgt. Mark Jones didn't give a 'yes' or 'no' answer when he was asked at trial if he's planning to sue. But he said he only wants to see justice carried out.

His son suffered a perforated ear drum and needed surgery on his buttocks after an alleged hazing event. A doctor testified that Marcus Jones' injury was as severe as anything he has seen in an auto accident, even though he had no broken bones or muscle damage.

Florida's new hazing law makes it a felony to cause serious bodily damage or death. But the law doesn't define serious bodily injury. Penalties can range from probation to five years in prison.

~snip~ They are accused of beating Jones with canes and boxing gloves to the point that he suffered a perforated ear drum and needed surgery on his buttocks. The fifth defendant allegedly participated by encouraging Jones and other candidates to bear up under the beatings while reviving them with water if they passed out.

1. Fraternity Gang Rape
There is actually a book by that name.

I don't like fraternities. I don't like good ole' boys. I don't like socially exclusive clubs. I don't like class separation, and I don't like social pecking orders.

15. my college banned them
The school was in a blue-collar town where most of the students were working- or middle-class, and the administration didn't see any point in encouraging elitism. There were plenty of clubs on campus to provide fellowship and recreation, and those who had their hearts set on being in an exclusive group would have to base it on what people were doing (the engineering or philosophy student unions, for example) rather than their family backgrounds.

21. MIne too -- and I am happy for it
I know many DUers were in frats and sororities, and stick up for them, but I have observed Greek behavior on campuses, and their effect on the students, and I find them elitist and just plain weird.

I went to a bunch of frat parties when I was in college, and almost all of them creeped me out. Lots of weird stuff goes on.

17. no kidding!

"In the fall of 1967, when huge numbers of college students were marching on Washington to protest the Vietnam War, Bush was quoted in the New York Times defending the branding of fraternity pledges with a hot coat hanger, saying the resulting wounds resembled "only a cigarette burn.""

16. Hope the get convicted
I was in the military and used to hang out at my brother's frat house all the time, have seen what I some would call "hazing". Most was good natured and part of the initiation to be part of the group, nothing brutal like this. What happened to this kid was felony battery and should be prosecuted as such. I have never been a fan of making specific laws that play to media hype like hate crimes and hazing laws, it should either be misdemeanor assault or felony battery which has already been on the Florida books forever. I wish the lawmakers would just keep it simple sometimes and not make laws that for things that could easily be prosecuted under existed statutes.

18. Kappas are a black fraternity
My roommate pledged Kappas my freshman year. It was pretty much assumed that they beat your ass stupid on the first day of pledging. And they did. This isn't like white fraternity hazing. It's literally a line-up with people beating on you. I don't know that that's the way it happens everywhere, but that was the expectation where I was in school. The white fraternity guys would talk about it in awe: they actually beat the shit out of the pledges, they would say.

Now if you just cause serious bodily harm or death outside of a hazing situation, that's OK?
