During a week of that saw habeus corpus set back to the year 1215, here's a spot of good news.

Can't wait to pass this one on to some of my RI friends.

POSTED: 2:47 p.m. EDT, September 29, 2006

BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) -- A Rhode Island lesbian couple won approval from a judge to marry in Massachusetts, paving the way for the first legal wedding of a same-sex couple from outside the only U.S. state where gay marriage is allowed.

Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice Thomas E. Connolly ruled that the wedding of Wendy Becker and Mary Norton, of Providence, Rhode Island, could go forward because their home state has no laws specifically banning same-sex marriages.

1. While this is a good step
I look forward to the day when Gays can get married wherever the hell they want. After all, they pay taxes in every state in the union.

2. it seems like an obvious human right to me
and the generation coming up agrees, but a scary percentage of the older demographic is just frighteningly homophobe.

3. Here's what I don't get:
Why does Rhode Island law trump Massachusetts law in determining whether an out-of-state couple may wed in Massachusetts, if the criteria for marriage under Massachusetts law is met?

4. It may be hard to fathom
but the state's right aspect will probably bring about allowing legal status for gay/lesbian marriages in practical terms for more couples than any attempt at a federal level (at least in the near future).

It ain't fair, but at least this is one more blow against the dark-ages folk.
