Democrats Who Back Terror Bill Get Cover

WASHINGTON - Breaking with their party, a handful of Democrats in competitive congressional races voted to approve President Bush's system to interrogate and prosecute terrorism suspects.

In doing so, they took away one arrow Republicans plan to use in their soft-on-security attack on Democrats.

"It's time for terrorists such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who planned the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to face justice," Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Texas, said, projecting a tough-on-terrorism position and sounding very much like Republicans who are gunning for his House seat Nov. 7.

The Texan is among the Democrats in hard-fought races who sided with Bush and Republicans...

The smart politics of the detainee vote
Did adroit Democratic candidates take away one of the GOP's best issues?

WASHINGTON - When the House voted Wednesday to pass the Bush administration-supported bill on treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Naval Base, the biggest surprise— at first blush — was that Ohio Democrat Sherrod Brown, a fierce opponent of the Iraq war and of President Bush, voted for the bill.

Brown, the Democrats’ Senate candidate in Ohio against Republican Sen. Mike DeWine, led all House Democrats in 2005 in the percentage of votes in which he opposed the president: 93.5 percent, according to Congressional Quarterly.

Brown is now appealing to voters beyond his own strongly Democratic district and needs to win over all Ohio voters since he’s in a tight race with DeWine.

Brown explained his vote this way in an interview with MSNBC.com Thursday: "Unlike Mike DeWine, I'm willing to stand up to my party when they're wrong."...

7. I'm in FL have have written his office many, many angry (polite) emails
And Iif I ever get a response, it's at least 4-6 weeks down the road, afte he's already gone and voted with Bush. Florida would've been a whole lot better off if Nelson retired and Bob Graham stayed on.

3. If a Democratic politician...
isn't skilled and smart enough to educate his constituency on why it was the right thing to do to vote against this obscenity, he doen't deserve to be in politics.

17. THIS Is What Happens When Politicians Are Elected By Slick Campaign Ads
it relieves them of the rhetorical skills to be a good parliamentician and an orator to the public. Whenever I turn on C-SPAN, I'm amazed at the number of mushmouthed congressmen and Senators we have. I think my senator Mark Dayton is the worst.

4. Not from me.
If any of those fuckers ever think they will ever receive another dime from me they will be sorely disappointed1 This is exactly why I don't donate to umbrella organizations like the DCCC and the DSCC (besides their leadership issues, Rahm, you asshole!) I will not have my money funding sellouts & you can rail at me all you want about how we need to have a Democratic Congress and then we can worry about, etc, etc. An outhouse by any other name is still a shit hole!

I am tired of being played by cynical SOBs who will not stand up for something as basic as Habeas Corpus. They won't stand up for me and say I am wrong, well that tears it. Fuck them.

9. Good strategy.
Now, if the Dems were really smart, they would vote WITH the Republicans on EVERY single issue every time.

That way the Republicans could never accuse us of not being just like them.

Because god forbid we be accused of being un-Republican.

10. I'm ashamed to be a democrat today
This is our fault for not calling our representatives to vote against this. We are legalizing the administration's torture tatics with this legislation.

I hope every democrat that voted yes to this, loses in the next election. They are not leaders if they can't stand up for what their votes want.

It's a sad day today for all democrats.

15. And they'll only get "cover" from the GOP for another . . .
5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . . 1, Okay, that's it! The bipartisan good feelings are over, and all you spineless Democrats who couldn't think of a reason why incinerating the Constitution wasn't a good idea are back to being fair game for every cheat, every smear, and every dirty trick the Republicans can think of.

Shame, shame, shame.

12. "I'm willing to stand up to my party when they're wrong."...
Brown thinks doing away with writ of Habeas Corpus is the right thing to do and allowing the torture of POWs. So do all you DUers still think he is better than Hacket?

16. Conventional "wisdom" costs Dems election after election
Edited on Fri Sep-29-06 03:15 PM by depakid
Cowardly stand for nothings don't deserve to be elected- and people see that.

Sherrod Brown and the rest of the sell outs can go F themselves. They're've made the party irrelevant. I wouldn't vote for one- nor will they ever get one nickle of my money.

Even if the Supreme Court overturns the Torture Bill, these Dems are still going to look pretty silly -- and weak.
