Rivals divided on Social Security

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Pete Ricketts says he would allow workers to divert part of their Social Security dollars into personal investment accounts.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson opposes personal accounts - as proposed last year by President Bush.

Ricketts also would consider raising the retirement age for full benefits by one year if it would help shore up the system in the long term.

Nelson said he won't consider raising the retirement age, raising payroll taxes or any other idea to save Social Security until there is a total package that is based on "actuarial science."
