Colorado gunman sexually assaulted hostages at school: sheriff

A gunman who took six girls hostage at a Colorado high school and then killed one teenager as well as himself sexually assaulted some of them, a U.S. law enforcement officer said Thursday.

"He did traumatize and assault our children," Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener told the Associated Press a day after the hostage-taking. "I'll only say that it's sexual in nature."

It began when Morrison walked into the building, opened fire and claimed to have explosives. He separated the males from the females and held six of the girls. A young girl was released shortly after, then hours later, three others were allowed to leave.

Cassidy Grigg, 16, a student at the school, said the gunman walked in, fired one shot at the floor and ordered the students to line up. He told the boys to leave and the girls to stay.

"You could tell that he wanted the females," Cassidy told NBC's Today show on Thursday. "He tapped me on the shoulder and he told me to leave the room. I told him, 'I don't want to leave."'

4. I don't think you can blame mis-direction on the Colo school shooting.

The shooter was kinda running on three donut tires, if you know what I mean. I really doubt that the BFEE had much to do with getting him to go bazoinkers.

To me, it doesn't even look like the media's obsessing over it much; all the headlines I'm seeing in my dailies barely mention it, because Bailey is nowhere near the crowded Denver Media Market, and thus, reporting on the story is not cheap. As for the guy and the dog...

2. I read this earlier today -- just horrible

Those poor, poor girls.

The boy mentioned in the story, Cassidy, tried to stay with the girls but was ordered at gunpoint to leave. However, he saved another girl who was getting ready to enter the room. He grabbed her and took her outside with him. He was the real man in the room that day.

The 16-year-old student who told the Today Show this morning that he was in a Platte Valley High School classroom when Duane Morrison took 6 students hostage yesterday made up the story, his mother said this afternoon.

Cassidy Grigg told the Today show this morning: "You could tell that he wanted the females. He tapped me on the shoulder and he told me to leave the room. I told him, "I don't want to leave."

But it never happened, according to his mother, Larina Grigg.

"Cassidy has never been dishonest in his life, but in this matter he wasn’t truthful," she said Thursday afternoon. "He was not in the room with the kids. He wants to say he’s sorry. I know and he knows he made a huge mistake. He lost one of his dear friends."

She said he "wanted to be a hero" but amid television crews scrambling to interview him about what he experienced, he "got caught up in the chaos." The mother said he "feels awful" about it and that's why he wanted to come forward and set the record straight.

'Creepy' man

Students at the school said they did not recognise the gunman who appeared to be dressed like a student. Jessica Montgomery, 15, told AP she had seen the gunman in a second-floor hallway shortly before noon. She described him as "creepy", saying he had acne and stubble on his face.
