The Associated Press

MALIBU, Calif. -- Edward Albert, who starred opposite Goldie Hawn in the 1972 comedy "Butterflies Are Free" and was the son of film and TV star Eddie Albert, has died. He was 55.

Albert died Friday from lung cancer at his home in Malibu, said Alan Silberberg, a family friend.

In 1972, he appeared in "Butterflies Are Free," playing a blind attorney who attempted to break free from his overly protective mother. The role earned him a Golden Globe as most promising male newcomer.

His movies included "40 Carats," "The Ice Runner" and "Guarding Tess." Among his TV credits were appearances on "Falcon Crest," "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" and "Port Charles."

Albert also was passionate about preserving the environment, serving on both the California Coastal Commission and the state's Native American Heritage Commission. The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy named a trail in his honor earlier this year.

"He was a person who gave back to everyone around him and to this planet," Silberberg said. Albert spent the last 10 years caring for his father, Eddie Albert, who died in 2005 at 99. His father is probably best known as the star of the TV show "Green Acres".

1. He was too young to die
I'm very sorry to hear this. :( I'd hoped he'd live a good long life like his daddy

2. Yeah. The cosmic decisions lately about who gets a "long lifespan"
are getting harder and harder to understand, karma-wise...

3. Gee, I thought he was older than that
He was a child, a mere 21, when he made that movie with Goldie, then...

You'll want to add a link for this story, BTW.

14. It was one of my favorites!
Netflix this one!

I have a strong feeling Republicans would hate it. It was very pro-counter-culture (hippie-types in San Francisco). The meanie mother was as a classic Republican beeatch.

30. Don't know if everyone is aware of this about his father..........
Eddie Albert. He was a marine in WWII and drove a DUK or whatever they call those small landing crafts that landed troops on the beach..... at Tarawa. That was the most horrible beach landing battle of the war. Boats could hardly make shore due to the volume of body parts of marines in the waters. Eddie Albert drove from the big ships to the beach repeatedly and was one of the few to tell about it. On his return trips from the beach he said he picked up dead and wounded and body parts of Marines that were floating in the water. There is film of him driving his craft during the battle that allows you to ID him. A true war hero.

And Flash forward to the 1960's movie.... "The Longest Day" about the Normandy landing. Eddie Albert plays a wimpy type guy who says...."Maybe we should call this landing off," as things are getting rough on the beach. Yet there's the big tough, John Marion Morrison Wayne, the only movie-star draft dodger of the war..... playing a tough-guy who walked 10 miles to battle with a compound fracture of the shin.

The irony.

Big fan of Butterflies are Free, mainly becuase of Goldie Hawn but he was very, very good in it.

Must be strange for your dad to make it to 99 and not even get much beyond half that.

Life is just a crapshoot.

27. He was outstanding in "Butterflies Are Free"
Saw that movie when it was first released. He was just so convincing in that role.

The scene when Goldie Hawn's character walks out on him brought me to tears.

He asked Goldie Hawn how long she had been married. She replied, "Oh, I don't know, but it seemed like weeks."
