Terrell Owens Hospitalized: Attempted Suicide?
By Mike Baron
Sep 27, 2006

Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens was reportedly hospitalized Tuesday night after what is being called an allergic reaction to pain medication.

FOX News is reporting that Owens may have attempted suicide. FOX News Channel says that KDFW/Channel 4 in Dallas initially made this claim.

KTVT/Channel 11 is reporting that a woman named "Etheridge," likely Owens' publicist Kim Ethridge, called police and reported a suicide attempt. The station said Owens ingested 35 pills.

According to the Dallas Police Department incident report, Owens told police he took more than 30 pills in a suicide attempt. A news conference is scheduled for later today during "working hours."

"This is not serious," Owens' publicist Kim Etheridge said in Wednesday's online edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The AP reports that no teammates or Cowboys officials were seen entering the hospital late Tuesday night.

Owens' status for Sunday's game against Tennessee is not immediately known. He was expected to practice Wednesday for the first time since breaking the bone leading to his right ring finger a week ago Sunday night.

1. Much as I loathe the man, I hope this wasn't the case.
It's a horrible thing to go through.

It would, however, really explain his constant need to draw attention to himself though...

2. Don't trust Fox 4 news in Dallas
Let's give this some time. However, with his past, nothing surprises me about Owens.

If this was an attempt, then he obviously needs help. I hope there aren't some Owens' haters who will revel in this news.

3. Fox news is REPULSIVE
Calling it a suicide attempt before the facts are in.

And if this guy is on pain meds, and perhaps had the meds changed -- he could very well BE having an allergic reaction!

12. I don't trust the local Dallas media when reporting on the Cowboys
I would rather get a definitive answer from a national source. The Dallas media revels in "bringing down the Cowboys" so to speak, and I believe the national media will be more in tune in reporting this fairly.

30. Or just took a few extra thinking it wouldn't be harmful
if the pain was severe enough

Not knowing what he was prescribed I wouldn't know what have a likelihood of having reactions. Or whether he was on other medications.

Update.....Dallas Cowboys holding 2:30pm Eastern news conference.

By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News

Dallas Cowboys star receiver Terrell Owens swallowed prescription pain medication Tuesday night in an apparent attempt to harm himself, according to a Dallas Police Department report released Wednesday morning.

A source who spoke to WFAA-TV called it a suicide attempt.

The police report says the complainant “stated that he was depressed” and that he had emptied a bottle of pain pills and was trying to harm himself, the report said.

Too much speculation and running around by the local twits reporting this in the Metroplex. I'm hoping we'll learn something definitive then.

28. In the world of super-macho athletes, this is maybe worse than death
A pro athlete losing face like this? Having to admit (as many have suspected) that he's probably bipolar?

Doesn't play well at the clubs.

Let me say that many, many people owe Owens an apology if he is diagnosed with mental disease.

16. DMN: Owens “stated that he was depressed” , wanted to "harm himself"

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/092706spoowens.1e22584a.html

The police report says the complainant “stated that he was depressed” and that he had emptied a bottle of pain pills and was trying to harm himself, the report said. Owens was transported to Baylor University Medical Center.

According to the KTVT-TV, doctors treated him by attempting to induce vomiting. The police report said he was treated for a drug overdose.

Last week, according to Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, Owens had a reaction to the pain medicine he was given following surgery in which a plate was inserted into his right hand to stabilize a fractured fourth metacarpal. Parcells said Owens became ill and could not work out, but he was improved the next day.

Earlier Tuesday, Parcells said Owens would practice some today and he had not ruled Owens out from playing Sunday at Tennessee. Owens was wearing a bone growth simulator Tuesday to help the healing process. According to Parcells, the swelling in Owens’ hand had gone down, and the biggest challenge for Owens would be handling the pain of catching passes.

33. TV Shows
I've wondered for awhile if this guy is bipolar. Frankly, if a black, male sports star would come out as having a mental illness and being treated for it, it wouldn't be a bad thing. Mental health awareness is even worse among adult men and African Americans than it is in the general population. Some prominent men have come out with depression, but most of them have been in the media (flakes, anyway, to the general population). A manly man like T.O. might do wonders for outreach.

Sorry to sound calculating, but I'm in mental health and I've seen the havoc wreaked when it isn't treated.

37. "Painkillers combined with the supplements"..."body is so clean"
Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 03:19 PM by rainbow4321
Hmmmm...

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/092706spoowens.1e22584a.html

Asked why he told Dallas police that he had tried to harm himself, Owens said, “At this point, I really wasn’t as coherent as they probably thought I was. There was a number of people asking me a lot of questions.”

Owens said he left practice Tuesday and took some pain medication for his injured hand. He had placed some recently prescribed pain pills in a drawer, which may have led his publicist, Kim Etheredge, to believe he had taken them all when she found the empty bottle, he said.

“Terrell was not coherent to speak,” she said. “The reason I called 911 is because he was not in his normal responsive state. He had had a long day, came home and had some treatment. Again, he takes many supplements. He’s trying to get back on the field. … He was in a lot of pain when he came home from work.” She also denied the suicide report, contending that the painkillers combined with the supplements that are part of his training regimen caused an adverse reaction.

"Here's a person whose body is so clean, it really had a negative reaction to the medication and supplements he was taking," Etheredge said. "Thank goodness someone was there to call an ambulance

39. Something strangely satisfying and amusing about seeing the media circus
have to double back, spin around and collect itself in all of this. This morning on Cowherd it seemed like TO's epitaph was practically written; now on ESPN radio it's been potshots at his publicist all night long ... what a joke. I know TO is a knucklehead in many ways, but the media blathering on if he so much as sneezes wrong is just silly. I'm glad Terrell Owens is okay.

Been around folkz having reactions like this to the anti-depressant Ativan. A very small amt can cause amnesia. They cannot remember if they already took the med, thereby taking too many ... even to the point of wondering why the script just filled is empty. After these sorts of episodes they remember nada.
