Pelosi asks for closed House session
WASHINGTON - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi asked her colleagues Tuesday to close the House's doors for a highly unusual secret session to discuss a classified intelligence analysis on global terrorism.

Such a session hasn't happened in the House since July 1983, when the chamber went into a closed session to discuss the United States' support for paramilitary operations in Nicaragua.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Pelosi, D-Calif., said the secret session is necessary to allow members to better understand the intelligence community's most recent assessment on global terrorism.

She said she hoped House Republicans would recognize the need for such an internal debate on the document, some of which leaked to the news media over the weekend.

4. Considering the House's abbreviated calendar
Losing a day right now would mean a lot of work that the Bush administration wants done will be left undone, including the "We want Bush to be King" bill. It will be interesting to see of the House Republicans keep their wagon hitched to Bush's falling star, or if they go into closed session and tell Chimpy to go hang.

5. About time the dems started using the parliamentary arsenal
This means ALL dem reps will be able to comment on the FULL report, not just bush's cherry-picked version of truthiness.

10. Just calling for the vote gives dems ammo
Now the GOPers have proven they don't want any dem to know the full content, thus confirming that Iraq has made us less safe.

I'd like to see one dem in the Senate pull the same thing. In the Senate all it takes is one senator to call a closed session not a full vote. Anyone correspond with Fiengold regularly?

It just boggles the mind after so many screwups that the Repukes want to sweep everything under the rug and "stay the course."

....Dems lose vote for closed House session

By KATHERINE SHRADER, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 42 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Democrats failed Tuesday to push the House into an unusual secret session to discuss a classified intelligence analysis on global terrorism that says the
Iraq war is nourishing a new generation of extremist operatives.

The proposal from House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was denied by a vote of 171-217. Such a session hasn't happened in the House since July 1983, when the chamber went into a closed session to discuss the United States' support for paramilitary operations in Nicaragua.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Pelosi said the secret session was needed to allow members to better understand the intelligence community's most recent assessment on global terrorism, some of which leaked to the news media over the weekend.

15. Shays was only Repug to vote with the Dems.
The vote to reject Pelosi's move was nearly straight party line. One Republican — Rep. Chris Shays of Connecticut, who is in a tough race for re-election — voted with the Democratic effort to shift the chamber's attention to one of the most controversial political issues of the November elections: the Bush administration's policies in the war on terror and its handling of the situation in Iraq.
