Rice evokes possible new sanctions against Syria
Rice evokes possible new sanctions against Syria
16 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AFP) - The United States is hoping to convince its allies to back new sanctions against Syria in response to its purported role in destabilizing Lebanon and Iraq and supporting the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said.

"We're going to have to look at tougher measures if Syria continues to be on the path that it's on," Rice told The Wall Street Journal in an interview, the transcript of which was released Monday by the State Department.

The United States has accused Syria of backing anti-US insurgents in Iraq and of involvement in the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri.

It also says Syrian support for the radical Islamic militia Hezbollah in Lebanon was a factor in sparking the recent conflict with Lebanon, while Rice accused Damascus of undermining attempts to form a moderate Palestinian government by backing rejectionists inside Hamas.

5. Weaker every day.
Nobody even pays attention anymore when they trot out this sort of rhetoric. Dolton is another one that has no credibility at all.

7. "purported role' is the key. And wasn't the US backing of Israel a factor
in sparking the recent conflict with Lebanon? Our backing was certainly a key factor in the absolute destruction that Israel undertook with no calls for stopping the attacks. Get a grip, people, this biased and hypocritical ME policy will no longer work and will continue to cost American lives and resources if a new administration continues down the same path as this administration.

9. now let me get this straight -- syria helps the u.s. after 9-11 --
the u.s. even expresses gratitude for that help -- syria agressively defends our embassy from terrorists -- and now after israel bombs the shit out of lebanon -- the u.s. wants to levy new sanctions against syria?

lol -- the u.s. has lost it's mind.

11. * needs to look tough, after Iran tells us to go f..k ourselves
Edited on Tue Sep-26-06 04:52 PM by teryang
the bushistas need a target weaker than Iran. the US is too vulnerable in all ways to take on Iran, even with sanctions.

This is really the most pathetic foreign policy I've ever seen.
