Falwell: Hillary Would Fire Up More Voters Than Lucifer

WASHINGTON — Nothing will motivate conservative evangelical Christians to vote Republican in the 2008 presidential election more than a Democratic nominee named Hillary Rodham Clinton — not even a run by the devil himself.

That was the sentiment expressed by the Rev. Jerry Falwell, the longtime evangelical icon and founder of the once-powerful Moral Majority, during private remarks Friday to church pastors and activists as part of the Values Voter Summit hosted this weekend by the country's leading Christian conservatives.

A recording of Falwell's comments was obtained by The Times, and his remarks were confirmed by eyewitnesses.

"I certainly hope that Hillary is the candidate," Falwell said, according to the recording. "She has $300 million so far. But I hope she's the candidate. Because nothing will energize my like Hillary Clinton."

Cheers and laughter filled the room as Falwell continued: "If Lucifer ran, he wouldn't."

29. I suppose these good Christians hate Hillary so much
because she wanted to get everybody health care, even poor people.

Yep, I guess Falwell thinks the devil is some weird liberal who likes to help poor people (sort of like Jesus).

I think Falwell represents Lucifer much better than Hillary.

42. That was my thought also.
If it is bad form to refer to a sitting president as the devil why is it not bad form to say the same thing about a former first lady? This people confirm they actually have no respect for anything including themselves.

Neither does his audience for that matter. I thought these people read the bible but Falwell apparently doesn't even bother to dust his, let alone actually open the cover for it.

45. Assumptions.
See. You assumed that because I disagree with Falwell and using him to make your point that I am planning to vote for Hillary in the primaries. You're wrong.

I just object to using someone as debased and corrupt as Falwell to support a position. And in fact, if I ever did find myself agreeing with Falwell, I would immediately consider the near certainty that I was on the wrong side.

47. I agree with your last point
that's why I pointed out that "for once" he was right (IMO).

Why all the anti-Falwell rants if you agree with what he stated? Better to understand the enemy. And better to deny them the easy target that we, and they, both believe that Hillary Clinton would be.

39. Could have told you that myself.
There's something about the "Hillary running for President" idea that brings all the Republicans cockroaches out of the woodwork. Go out into the hills and ask ten random strangers how they feel about President Hillary. You'd get a similar answer nine times out of ten, "not if me and my buds at the VFW have anything to say about it," and the tenth would say, "seriously, do you Democrats enjoy getting your asses kicked in November?"

As long as she's the junior Senator from New York, she doesn't register on their radar, but the moment some jerk from Fox News raises the possibility that she might run for President, every beer joint in Bubbaland is abuzz with the story. I could go home to Mom and Dad next week, and I'd hear him ask me what I thought about Hillary before I could finish my beer.

I hate that this is the way it is, but it just is. Let her serve New York State. Let her do it well. Give us a majority that will let her chair some committees. But for God's sake, let her STAY in New York. We need her right where she is.

So, there is that. (Seriously, if Lucifer switched to Armani for the work week and a nice pair of cowboy boots and some close fitting jeans for weekend jaunts to clear Hell's little corners of brush, well, he would probably carry several states. Appearances counts you know.)

Honestly, the fact that Falwell can comment on Lucifer personally is very telling. It says something that Falwell has been obsessing over Ye Olde Boy, even to the point of thinking about running Him for office. Very telling indeed.

Wait a minute. The President never tells the truth and he says he's not the Devil. Hugo Chavez says he is.

So does that mean Jerry Falwell thinks Bush is going to run for President again? I'd mention the 22nd Amendment, but who pays attention to the Constitution anymore?

hmm... reminds me of when bush was asked about the growing Democratic Party leads in the upcoming election and how he feels about the prospect that they may win... "that isn't gonna happen."

sounds like Falwell's "god" has the keys to the Diebold machines.

I hadn't seen any pictures of Falwell recently and was SHOCKED at how overweight he is. Wasn't he recently hospitalized? I remember hearing that about a year ago. Surprised that he hasn't lost weight. He has always been large, right? He just seems really bloated now. Like my father did before he died of liver failure due to alcoholism.
With all his money you would think he could afford a nutritionist and trainer. His body just screams gluttony.

Falwell Acknowledges Clinton Comment

Sunday September 24, 2006 9:01 PM

By DENA POTTER

Associated Press Writer

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Rev. Jerry Falwell acknowledged on Sunday saying
that if Hillary Rodham Clinton were the Democrats' presidential nominee
in 2008, it would motivate conservative evangelical Christians to oppose
her more than if the devil himself were running.

Falwell said in a telephone interview that his comments to several hundred
pastors and religious activists at the "Value Voter Summit" conference were
"totally tongue-in-cheek."

-snip-

Falwell told the AP that he did not intend to demonize the former first lady.
"That was totally tongue-in-cheek and everyone in the building knew that
and everyone laughed," Falwell said.
