State to investigate Boston vote count as candidate seeks recount

BOSTON --Secretary of State William Galvin said he is ordering a review of Boston's handling of the primary election on Tuesday after problems surfaced with the count in a hotly contested state Senate race in which all the votes had to be hand-counted.

On Friday, the lead challenger to longtime incumbent state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson said she will seek a recount, just one day after about 2,700 ballots in eight precincts apparently overlooked on Tuesday were publicly counted.

The votes in the Second Suffolk District senate race had to be hand-counted because all the candidates were conducting write-in or sticker campaigns. For reasons that still are not clear, some votes either were not counted or not entered on tally sheets.

"I think the issue on Tuesday was disturbing because it was so blatant," Galvin told The Boston Globe.
