NYT: Decline in Gas Prices Isn’t Buoying Detroit
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/23/business/23gas.html?hp&ex=1159070400&en=ba9ef2d71836c323&ei=5094&partner=homepage

Just when $3-a-gallon gasoline looked as if it were here to stay, it left.

With many buyers unconvinced that gasoline prices are permanently falling, big cars like the 2007 Lincoln Navigator may prove a hard sell.

But it was around long enough to devastate Detroit’s automakers by convincing many car shoppers that smaller is better.

Now that gas prices have fallen almost 50 cents in the last month, moving below $2 a gallon in some markets, will car shoppers once again start thinking of buying the S.U.V.’s and other big vehicles that have been Detroit’s bread and butter for the last decade?

For now, that may be wishful thinking, according to many dealers and auto executives.

2. devastating...
just devastating... we are in for some very lean years ahead as a country. I've already been in them, but these families with kids and houses, they're going to see the full effect of the bush-mistake this country made.

I can see the dems getting congress half back, easy, and they'll blame the dems if this economy gets real bad, but we'll deal with that LINE when we get to it, for now, let's hope we win 25 house seats or something like that and 5 or more senate seats.

3. Sad indeed, but these workers could still be employed if
they were working on the electric car that was developed/engineered by Big Auto and subsequentlinly killed by their pimp, Big Oil.

4. of course the gas won't stay at lower price for long
people do expect and accept a "normal" price hike with any product

but with the recent spikes/hikes in gas - we've all been burnt at the pumps and this makes us wary of jumping into an gas guzzler just because the gas price has dropped

Yeah, it's great the price is going down - but for how long? And what excuses are looming on the horizon for another big jump?

--- bush doing the booga-booga about Iran. General feeling in my neck of the woods is that bush will invade Iran, and whether it's supported or not by the country, it will result in higher gas prices

--- Iraq/Afghanistan mess, how long before that explodes even more and effect gas prices from the "unease" by the oil marketeers?

--- one big terror attack away from a leap in crude oil prices

--- hurricane season is not over

--- will prices continue to drop after the (s)election?

people do not trust the oil excuses, and they certainly do not trust the bushies/repubs to honestly investigate, let alone take action against any wrong doing.

5. Americans have been paying higher prices for gas/oil for
three-quarters of this year; and the car manufacturers think that, just because we get a price break in the last quarter, we're going to rush out and buy a car?
