AP: Calif. Gov. Vetoes Universal Health Bill
Calif. Gov. Vetoes Universal Health Bill

Saturday September 23, 2006 4:46 AM

By STEVE LAWRENCE

Associated Press Writer

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a universal health
care bill Friday, saying it would create a "vast new bureaucracy."

The bill would have provided every California resident with health insurance
through a program administered by a new entity, the California Health Insurance
Agency.

The system would have been partially financed by the state's current spending
on health care and partly by consumers and their employers in place of private
insurance payments. A state commission would have made recommendations on
premiums for patients and businesses.

In an unusually long veto message, the Republican governor touted his efforts
to expand two other government health care programs that serve the poor. He said
he wanted to see something that addresses affordability, shared responsibility
and the promotion of healthy living.

1. I like the bill's author's response which basically said he's more
interested in helping the private insurers.

6. Yes, he'd have no problem into turning tax $ to private enterprise
He just doesn't get it that no one trusts private health carriers anymore to get the best bang for the buck.

10. The boom to the Cali economy would be TREMENDOUS.
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 09:50 AM by PerceptionManagement
Business would FLOCK to the state. Any company that could unload their health care cost to the state would do it instantaneously.

Not only would it be cheaper that what they have now, it would be BETTER. What a tragic mistake.

3. I know people who have a lot more to say about the current system
The bureaucracy within that system is what assists in keeping prices up.

Never mind some screwy HIPAA nonsense that keeps him from getting child support while the ex gets his personal information en masse!

5. Any chance they can override the veto?
There's nothing wrong with health programs for the poor (quite the contrary), but the Gropenator is forgetting about the huge population of middle class who can no more afford today's high insurance premiums than the poor.

Our group premium is $1155/mo. for the 3 of us. Higher than the freaking mortgage fer chrissakes ... and only headed higher while the republicacas are in charge.
:grr: :grr:

7. Looks like it passed with 64.8% of the vote, with 3 senators not voting.
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 07:10 AM by merwin
There is a definite chance of an override, provided they can convince ONE person to switch votes or one of the non-voting senators to vote yes (which would make 67%)

Here's the results of the vote

This universal health care bill is the work of Sen. Sheila Kuehl, a Democrat over the past three years. The media cover on this bill is a joke, why, Because a lot of their employees are covered by a union, the administration employees are covered by their respective company (a selling point to attach employees) and lets not forget, not to piss-off the advertisers (the insurance companies who donate so much money to politicians and our FREE TV viewing).

People just did not know about this bill. Besides, Arnold regurgitated line, "vast new bureaucracy." was the one used in 1993 by the Republicans, when the Clinton's did make an effort at universal health care. Arnold's other line about helping the poor is also a joke. I was making $32,000 dollars a year and did not have insurance. It would have cost me over $4000 to get coverage from a HMO that was half way decent. It was cheaper to find a Doctor, pay $40 visit every two months and get samples to take of my asthma problems. If things got really bad, I could go to an emergency room and become a charity case. That is what Ronald Reagan did in the eighties with Aids patients. Nobody knew about Aids in the years passed other than being a gay disease just like they knew about the inter-workings of this bill just vetoed.
