Agence France-PresseAustralia said it would ensure a fair trial for one of its citizens facing a death sentence for terrorism in the United States, but rejected calls for the man to face justice in his homeland.
Justice Minister Chris Ellison expressed confidence Monday a US military tribunal would give a fair hearing for alleged Taliban fighter David Hicks, who has been held without charge at the US military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Ellison said Australia, unlike Britain, would not push for repatriation of its citizens captured by US-led forces in the war on terror.
Heading to Washington for discussions on the Guantanamo detainees, Ellison said he would discuss practical aspects of the trial such as access to lawyers and the presumption of innocence. ---
