Evangelical voters more jaded in 2006
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Christian conservatives, traditionally a reliable Republican constituency, aren't necessarily a GOP gimme this time around. There is an undercurrent of concern that some evangelicals, unhappy that the GOP-led Congress and President Bush haven't paid more attention to gay marriage and other "values" issues, may stay home on Election Day or even vote Democratic.

"Conservative Christians are somewhat disenchanted with Republicans," said Kenyn Cureton, vice president for convention relations with the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination with nearly 16 million members.

Religious conservatives are unhappy the Republican-led Congress hasn't paid enough attention to "values issues," he said, noting that even a push this summer against same-sex marriage came too late.

"It has not escaped our notice that they waited until just a few months from the November elections to address our agenda," Cureton said.

1. Sad people
Apparently, many of these fundies are just lusting after a same sex marriage themselves and feel that it must be made illegal to prevent themselves from being sinners.

:freak:

Odd, Strange, Bizarre Cult. Very odd.

2. Republicans not hating intensely enough
The gop has failed to destroy the constitution, the number one item "valued" by the religiously insane. Cureton is a domestic enemy of the constitution, he has no use for it other then to limit constitutional liberties of groups of citizens he hates. Is that how Jefferson wanted the document used?

3. BOSSHOG, Hopefully, a majority
will stay home shaving their pubes on election day in preparation for the "Bridegroom" coming.

This country would be a hell of a lot better if they would just rapture their asses the hell out of here.

One of the best bumper stickers I ever saw;

"In case of Rapture...Can I have your car?"

4. Poor evangelicals.
The world is still here (if barely); women are still free to walk the streets (for now); some women in some parts of the country can still purchase birth control medication and obtain abortions (if more expensive and difficult than ever); women are still present in the workplace (if still paid 70% of what their male counterparts are paid); public schools still allow children other than Christians freedom from Christian communal prayer (except where the law is ignored) ...

Must be hell to be an evangelical these days. In the 35 years since the religious right has declared war on society and culture, it has not yet prevailed! What's taking God so long, anyway? :sarcasm:

5. Sorry, not believing it
Anybody who thinks the GOP has not done enough to oppose gay marriage is NOT going to vote Democratic as some sort of protest. Staying home, sure, but threatening to vote for the Democratic Party is just over the top here...

26. Not necessarily
Items like jobs, health insurance, anti-war feelings etc. register with a lot of fundies. It's just the GOP keeps promising all sorts of exciting GOODIES like fag-bashing, and then they never deliver. So some may switch parties out of economic self-interest because they might as well get better health care if they can't stick it to the homos.

Most fundies aren't rich and have little in common with the Repukes apart from religious intolerance. And if the repukes aren't delivering, they might look elsewhere. Or more likely, just say a pox on both of you and stay home.

27. Not all Evangelicals are Right Wingers. This article fails utterly to
point THAT out.

Liberal Evangelicals ARE beginning to finally speak out and be heard.

It may very well be they are making inroads into the Evangelical movement.

vote Dem. They might jump to the Constitution Party but not the Democratic Party.

the 1950's can be stopped...ahh...yes...the 50's...what a wonderful period that was...when white males held all the power...oh wait...that's still true...my bad.

8. I don't buy it
at least not the part about them crossing over to vote. Staying home, maybe.

There will be lots of crossing over to vote against reps, but it won't be from the fanatical evangelicals, not gonna happen.

Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 10:31 AM by cybildisobedience
Remember the mysterious, invisible "values voters" who came out in droves to vote for Bush in 2004, the ones who accounted for all the unbelievable last minute swings to Bush?
If the evangelicals are disenchanted, who will the GOP/pundits now cite as the reason for another miraculous GOP win?

Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 01:53 PM by AnneD
they finally figured out that Bush has played them like a Stradivarius all along. I tried to tell some of my CC friends all along. Now they are trying to tell me that all politician are alike:eyes: Lord give me the patience. I tell them that I am not perfect, I find it easy to forgive someone for a lapse in moral judgment. But I cannot forgive someone that repeatedly lies, never admitting to it. And worse yet, lying for personal gain. Yes, Clinton lied, but to cover personal embarrassment. Bush lied to engage us in conflict and has continued to lie for personal gain. Now which is worse?

21. "All politicians are bad" is the standard GOP line these days.
That's the line Republicans are spouting out as a means to deflect attention away from the sins of their party.

23. And you best be calling these folks out on it.....
remember we had a budget surplus, a smaller government, and we weren't at war. Had we stayed the course in Afghanistan-we have been in and out in under 2 years, caught Osama, and put the squeeze on SH from the outside....Hello, you don't start another war until you end the first (Hitler made THAT mistake in Russia). And Iraq was not even involved with 9/11.

I don't cut these folk slack, you can't pray your way or be raptured out of this mess. This guy has a small business and he is being killed since the GOP took office. They talk to me at their own peril-they know how I feel and I can verbally defend myself. They have a hard time wrapping their mind around the fact that I am a God fearin' church goin' blue as the deep blue sea liberal. My Christian charity embarrasses them (I speak up for the poor and quote scripture and parable to back me up). My best moment was when I loaned them money when they had an unexpected short fall. No lecture needed. It felt good on so many levels......

22. When will they realize they are being used?
Abortion, gay marriage, flag burning are just brought up every election cycle to get them to vote.
I'm hoping one day they'll wake up and leave the GOP to start their own party.

But I guess they won't recognize that until their pastors are involved in scandals.
