Chavez targets President Bush again, calls him 'alcoholic,' 'sick man'
NEW YORK (AP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez visited a Harlem church Thursday and promised to double the amount of discounted heating oil his country ships to needy Americans. But he also took another swipe at President Bush.

A day after he called Bush "the devil" in a speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Chavez said of the president: "He's an alcoholic and a sick man."

Chavez received a round of applause from the crowd at Mount Baptist Olive Church, which included activists and other supporters as well as actor Danny Glover.

49. I agree with Bill Clinton...
This will come back to bite HUGO. It makes him out to be a small man. World leaders should stay above this type of rhetoric. I am sure it works for him in Caracas. And it seems to play okay in Harlem. But I doubt it will work in his favor in the other 99% of the USA.

50. Bill Clinton is a wealthy white man
as are the elites throughout Latin America. They will be overrun by the majority of the people whom they have exploited for centuries.

Clinton speaks for the interests of his class, which is why he is still defending neolib globalism because he is not the one that has been hurt by it, as the workers in America and Latin America have been.

Democrats must be careful not to side with loose cannons like Chavez.

If you want to hand the republicans another victory, keep this shit up. Please come to your senses and use a little fucking common sense!

39. you mistake my motives, Mr. Moderate....
I applaud Hugo Chavez for being a thorn in the side of U.S. foreign policy in the Americas, which-- like him-- I regard as irredeemably evil. As an American, that evil is done in my name. I repudiate it. When Hugo Chavez speaks about the U.S., Hugo Chavez speaks for me.

to your heart...not exposed on your sleeve. Dems should stop this crap of cheering on Chavez (even if what he says is true) if they know what's good for them or another election will go down the tube. Rethugs will use this against us!

Besides the man was rude! He's suppose to be a statesman and he wasn't.
Let's not all get in the gutter because of bush*. We are better than that.

43. What are you afraid of?
stop worrying about what Republicans think and start thinking about what we should think. It's common sense to side with what's right, and this is nothing but right. If you want to wrap more duct-tape around your mouth for the benefit of Republicans, keep it up, if you want to try to change things, make an actual stance.

47. Who is worried about what Republicans think?
For my part I worry not about what Republicans (or whoever the 1/3 of the population who always support him in the polls is) think. I, too, believe that it is important to say what is right and here at DU that is a very safe thing to do (holier than thou and all that). I enjoy a good zing directed at people that I don' like and don't always care who delivers the zing.

I also like to win an election every now and then and realize that the middle third of the electorate has something to do with who wins those. Does that mean that we can never say publicly what we really believe? Of course not. (The Greens after all say what they really believe and vote their beliefs and they are sometimes the not most popular people around here.) But I do expect our candidates to use that melon on their shoulders to appeal, not only to the choir, but to those in the middle who can be won over.

52. Many
Yes, winning elections are important, but standing up for something is part of that. Either we echo Chavez' comments, either we ignore it, or we effectively lock arms with an administration we should have nothing but contempt for. We can voice direct or indirect support for that same administration, but let's voice support for ourselves first.

"Winning over the middle" isn't bad, but selling yourself out in the hopes of doing so is. It's not just about being idealistic, it's about being pragmatic.

6. He is. Bush long ago left to the realm of even Nixonian behavior.
What I'm getting from alot of the messages in the various kerfuffles in these threads reminds me of the following exchange.

A: "Your sister's ugly!"

B: "Goddamn right she is, but I'm going to sock you for saying it!"

A: "Why? You argree!"

B: "Damn right I do, but nobody has the right to insult members of a family except themselves."

I know that Bush has been on the jaggedy edge for quite a while now. Things have been absolutely dismal, everything is just falling apart for him.

I'm an alcoholic who stopped my "youthful indiscretion" of drinking at age 25. I'm 54 now, but even thought I'm sober, I'm still an alcoholic and only one drink away from ruin.
