Turkey to aid Iraqi Kurds in civil war

NEW YORK, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Turkey would protect Iraqi Kurds in the event of an all-out civil war in Iraq, Turkey's foreign minister told a Turkish-American group in New York.

"The core of the problem is that if Iraq was divided, there would definitely be a civil war and neighboring countries definitely would be involved in this," Abdullah Gul said in a breakfast speech to the American Turkish Society in New York.

If that happens, Turkey would support Iraqi Kurds, Gul pledged.

...

He said Turkey supports a gradual withdrawal of U.S.-led forces from Iraq, underscoring the importance of Iraqi security forces attaining national and border security.

1. Odd, Considering The Problems They Have With the PKK
The PKK is a Kurdish separatist group that recently set off bombs in Ismir and Istanbul and makes the southern region very dangerous.

4. Hey now -- give them some credit
They just want to make sure nothing happens to all that oil, and are offering to become responsible stewards of their neighbor's resources....

(do I really NEED a ' :sarcasm: ' here?)

5. The inclusion of more Kurds within Turkey will just make
matters worse for the Turkish government. I think this has to do with Baghdad shutting down PPK offices in Iraq.
