Bush assures Muslims U.S. not at war with Islam

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - President Bush on Tuesday appealed directly to Muslims to assure them that the United States is not waging war with Islam as he laid out a vision for peace in the Middle East before skeptical world leaders at the United Nations.

On the sidelines, Bush pressed Iran to return at once to international talks on its nuclear program and threatened consequences if they do not.

But his speech to the United Nations General Assembly was less confrontational and aimed at building bridges with people in the Middle East angry with the United States.

"My country desires peace," Bush told world leaders in the cavernous main hall at the U.N. "Extremists in your midst spread propaganda claiming that the West is engaged in a war against Islam. This propaganda is false and its purpose is to confuse you and justify acts of terror. We respect Islam."

They raided one in Southfield, MI yesterday. I guess the group may have been charitable to Iraqis during the years the sanctions were on against Saddam. I'm not sure of all the specifics, but Debbie Schlussel has been decrying several muslim groups in the Detroit area and this was one of them. She's not exactly balanced in her views on muslims (or in her mental status).

In last weeks' NYT magazine, there was a description of a wall painting in N. Lebanon: "AMERICA IS GOD'S ENEMY".

Many, many Muslims sure as hell think that America is at war with THEM, and some of them are acting accordingly. Has GWB read ANYTHING OBL has written about this?

and they were appalled by his performance, head-shaking, open-mouthed horror, stone-faced 'allies', actual laughter and a whole five seconds of half-hearted 'applause' when he finished.
