FBI raids home of Missouri Islamic leader and war critic

COLUMBIA, Mo. - FBI agents searched the home of a prominent Islamic community leader and critic of the war in Iraq on Monday, three days after bureau officials met with community members at a local mosque in an effort to improve relations with mid-Missouri Muslims.

A dozen agents searched the home of Shakir Abdul-Kaf Hamoodi and his wife, Lamya Mukhlef Najem, an FBI spokesman said. Agents arrived at Hamoodis' southwest Columbia home about 8 a.m. Monday and removed boxes and computer equipment throughout the day, neighbors said

Hamoodi, 54, grew up in Anah, a town in central Iraq, and lived in Scotland and France before moving to Columbia 21 years ago. He studied at the University of Missouri-Columbia before working as an assistant research professor for the school's College of Engineering.

Hamoodi now owns an international market, and his wife teaches at an Islamic school in Columbia. He has made several appearances in opposition to the war in Iraq, and the couple's home was recently defaced with graffiti.

3. Are there any charges being filed against this guy?

Just wondering. Otherwise there's no real reason to raid his house, except that he's a Muslim and/or a war critic. But if his neighbors are vandalizing his house, one would hope that the local police are investigating. If not, they should be ashamed. As in letters to the editor of local papers and talking about it incessantly on radio and tv.
