Whitehouse opens big lead over Chafee in RI Senate race
Looks like all the national GOP campaigning for Chafee has turned off a lot of people in this bluest of all states.

The Rasmussen report has added three Senate races from the toss up to lean-dem too.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2006/BalanceofPower.htm

http://news.yahoo.com/s/rasmussen/20060918/pl_rasmussen/rhodeislandsenate20060918

The GOP establishment forcefully backed Republican Lincoln Chafee in the primary over a more conservative and arguably less-electable Republican. But, perhaps damaged by having to struggle so long for the nomination, it is not clear how electable Senator Chafee remains. The incumbent now lags his Democratic challenger 43% to 51%.

This is the fourth Rasmussen Reports election poll in row showing former Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse with the lead-and the lead is growing. Our last pre-primary poll found the challenger clinging to a narrow two-point lead. Before that, Whitehouse led by six. In July he was ahead by five.

5. I do not understand why this would surprise anyone.
As I have mentioned previously, chafee winning his primary was all about kicking laffey (and the obnoxious club for growth)to the curb. It has little to do with november.

Chaffe has the most difficult job possible, demonstrating why he should be returned to washington in spite of the fact that he's a republican, in a state where bush's poll numbers are consistantly the lowest in the nation. No one, NO ONE wants bush stopped more than the people of RI, and Chafee (for all his independance) can not disentangle himself from the 'R' on the end of his name.

8. But don't forget the $60 million rove hate machine
that's going to be unleashed in the last few weeks before the election. Dems don't have the cash to counter that. And I can tell you from having worked the polling station on the primary a LOT of people got motivated by the Chafee shark ad.

It looks good for Whitehouse but I'm going to be putting in some time with his campaign. We need every shoulder at the wheel we can possibly have.

(side note- ain't it great coming from the bluest of all blue states)

16. So what the poll is saying is
1/5 of RI is delusional.
"Twenty percent (20%) of Rhode Island voters strongly approve of President Bush's job performance."
That's still better than every other state -- as far as I know.

Glad to hear Whitehouse is winning.

on note: Personally, I do like Chaffee. But, not in this race.

24. Chafee lost my last bit of respect when he voted for Crazy Von Mustache
It was Chafee's vote that got Bolton's nomination to the floor the first time.

As to the 20%, at least that makes us the least delusional.

19. More on Sheldon Whitehouse..
I love writing that "Whitehouse"!

"Sheldon is running for the U.S. Senate because he sees the need to work for a change in Washington and a new national agenda. As a Senator, Sheldon will work to strengthen Social Security, protect the environment, and make health care more available and affordable. He will be a strong and reliable voice for the people of Rhode Island. Sheldon and his wife Sandra, a marine biologist and environmental advocate, reside in Providence with their two children, Molly and Alexander."

"WHITEHOUSE JOINS 5 WOMEN OF THE US SENATE"

"With the eyes of the nation on Rhode Island’s U.S. Senate race, five women of the United States Senate joined Democratic candidate Sheldon Whitehouse in Providence yesterday evening to headline a fundraising reception benefiting the Rhode Island Democratic Party and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).

Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), and Patty Murray (D-WA) took part in the event, “one of five this weekend in a cross-country burst of campaigning for the women Democratic senators that took them from San Francisco and Washington State to Ohio, Michigan and Rhode Island.”

20. You should have heard Chuck Grassley on this race
Ole Iowa lunatic Chuck Grassley stated during an interview on IPTV last weekend that republicans have turned it around with the victory by Chafee.. He claimed he couldn't have said that 3 months ago but can make bold predictions now.. I had a good laugh at chuck's expense.

29. Ham-handed manipulation like with Lieberman
Is ol KKKarl losing his touch? I hope and pray this is a wipeout year. At this point, it appears that Illinois is going to send a lot of Repukes packing. If so, it will carry over into the congressional races, and we could pick up four seats in one state alone. The Repuke for governor is behind something like 70-20, and that is a really, truly lacklustre Blagoivich. I'm serious, any other year, Blago would be gone. Instead, he has the largest lead in living memory.

30. Another poll of likely voters says Whitehouse 40 Chafee 39.
(Associated Press)
Poll: R.I. Senate Race Neck-And-Neck

Tuesday September 19, 2006 8:31 PM

By RAY HENRY

Associated Press Writer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee and Democratic challenger
Sheldon Whitehouse are neck-and-neck two months before an election that could help
decide the balance of power in the U.S. Senate, according to a new Brown University
poll.

If the election were held Tuesday, 40 percent of voters said they would select former
attorney general Whitehouse, compared to 39 percent for Chafee.

That lead is negligible because the telephone poll, conducted between Saturday and Monday,
questioned 578 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

innacurate over the last few elections.

But still it's a good policy to assume you're behind in the polls and keep on fighting
