Chirac urges no sanctions on Iran
French President Jacques Chirac has said referring Iran to the UN Security Council is not the best way to resolve a crisis over its nuclear programme.

"I don't believe in a solution without dialogue," Mr Chirac told Europe-1 radio, urging countries to remove the threat of sanctions against Iran.

The US is leading calls for sanctions to be imposed on Iran if it refuses to suspend uranium enrichment.

Mr Chirac's call comes as world leaders gather for the UN General Assembly.

3. Dialogue....what a novel concept!
Remember when dialogue was used to head off conflicts? Weren't we always told to try talking out your problems first?
Maybe * never received that lecture?!?

6. To be fair, if you had Bush's verbal skills,
would you rely on dialogue?

4. IAEA chief urges Iran negotiations
The International Atomic Energy Agency chief called on Monday for "long-overdue" negotiations on Iran's nuclear work, launching an IAEA meeting focussed on efforts to stem the spread of volatile nuclear know-how.

Convened with world powers about to consider U.N. sanctions if last-gasp EU-Iran dialogue fails, the meeting will examine how best to assure a global atomic fuel supply for development while minimising risks of diversions to bomb making.

The U.N. nuclear watchdog's annual General Conference of 140 member states will also see another Arab demand for a Middle East nuclear-free zone given resentment at Western pressure on Iran while Israel's presumed atomic arsenal remains no issue.

(snip)

IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei fears sanctions could spur Iran to expel the agency's inspectors and he pressed world powers to do their utmost for a negotiated deal.
