Pope praised for making apology
Pope praised for making apology

Last Updated: Saturday, 16 September 2006, 13:16 GMT 14:16 UK

Muslim groups in the UK have praised Pope Benedict XVI for apologising after Muslims were offended by his speech.

The Vatican said the Pope was sorry he had offended Muslims by using a quote stating Muhammad had brought only "evil and inhuman" things to the world.

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said the Pope made "a good first step" in "recognising the hurt he caused".

Ajmal Masroor of the Islamic Society of Britain said it was "greatly noble" of him to accept "his mistake".

<snip>

Reacting to the Pope's statement of regret, the MCB continued: "But (we are) not sure whether this is enough of an apology.

"It would've been better if he'd said the views of the emperor no way accorded with his. There is still a concern that he has not repudiated the views of the emperor."

1. he has said this in previous statements (read The Time articles of today)

2. Good, apologizing is the correct thing to do. Billions of people were hurt
by his statement.

10. It seems the
only people who cannot be criticized any longer are Muslims.

Why can't they "grow up?"

Muslim Imams criticize Christians and Jews in most of the major mosques in the middle east every Friday.

11. You should come to one of the fundamentalist churches in USA
and you will find yourself hearing preaching against "dead churches," generally referring to a mainline denominational church nearby.

Southern Baptists even went so far as to say that God doesn't listen to the prayers from Jews.

3. Even the Pope can realise a mistake. HERE THAT GEORGIE!
The Pope, the man closest in the que to God's ear can apologise and realise he's made a mistake.

I know Georgie talks to God but the real question is DOES GEORGIE LISTEN TO GOD!

Again...the most holy man on earth...the man closest to God. The man with a congregation and personal connection to BILLIONS can apologise for his mistakes and and GEORGIE can't.

Little lord pissypants can't apologise or recognise his mistakes.
Emperor George can't apologise or recognise his mistakes.

HELLLO is anyone listening?

5. The original remarks

Regardless of the confusion over the one comment, it would be nice if we had more leaders who could speak to the questions of our time with such a breadth of knowledge and intellect. Or maybe he needs to dumb it down and punch it up, who knows.

Last paragraph sums up the purpose of the remarks.

6. Benedict's problem is that he is very professorial. He doesn't realize
that people might read his comments differently than he does.

12. I read those remarks, and they are not what was reported by the press
the German press, no less! Can't sound bite a complex topic.

13. Incredibly complex topic
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what his point is, and I've read it several times. I am impressed, however, that he's willing to jump into the topic of total faith regardless of reason vs. spiritual faith inclusive of reason. While I know Catholicism has traditionally included natural law and reason, I do also find it interesting that he doesn't mention any of the erroneous calculations of the Church itself, and whether absence of reason contributed to them. Like the Inquisition or even stem cell research or condom use to prevent AIDS. I consider the use of condoms a defense of my own life, particularly in a country where testing isn't readily available or has stigmas associated. I don't get why the Chuch doesn't see it that way, or even pretend that they do in order to stem the AIDS epidemic. Anyway, the absence of any commentary about the Church's errors makes me wonder if I understand his point at all.

8. Someone of such stature should never have made such statement
to begin with....and now that he has publicly apologized, nevertheless shows that even the pontiff recognizes that mistakes do occur and apology is indeed a good way to correct them.

9. He knew exactly what he was saying. He also has not
apologized - he just said he was sorry Muslims were offended - which is a big difference.

He's also an idiot and a nazi. The first religious figure to invoke spreading God's word through the "sword" was Moses.

He was opposed to a muslim Turkey joining the EU because he said Europe was Christian and must be protected.

What an evil prick he is.
