New concerns raised about security of voting computers(trial next week!)
Edited on Fri Sep-15-06 09:33 PM by BleedingHeartPatriot
The genie will not go back into the bottle. The word is out, even here in our cowtown!

DENVER (AP) - More criticism for some of the voting machines set to be used in Colorado elections this fall.

A lawsuit has been filed by 13 voters to stop the use of voting computers made by four manufacturers. In a deposition in that case, a state employee says he certified some voting computers after only about 15 minutes of security checks even though he has no formal training in computer science.

A lawyer for those trying to block the use of the machines says an expert would need only two minutes to reprogram and distort votes on one brand of the computers.

The secretary of state's office says the law requires a printout of each computer vote so voters can check to make sure that the machine correctly recorded their choices.n The case goes to trial in Denver next week.

7. a "hole" not mentioned
we're pushing for a "print out" to verify a vote.

ok - so I go vote, and get a printed "receipt" which shows I voted for "x"

now when the polls close - they run the machine and get totals which shows "Z" has won

what's stopping the machine from printing out my "receipt" for "X", but actually recording it for "Z"? If the vote can show up for "X" on the screen, but internally record it for "z" - the same thing can be done with a printed 'receipt'

do the election officials then ask everyone to stop by with their "recipts" so it can be "hand counted"? How many people would actually do that?

maybe a 'carbon' print out of each reciept needs to be done too at the actual time of voting?

9. An absolutely useless provision:
"the law requires a printout of each computer vote so voters can check to make sure that the machine correctly recorded their choices."

How much programming skill does it take to make a machine print one thing & record an other?

Print X:Writefile Y
