Katrina czar visits La. trailer campus

NEW ORLEANS -- The head of President Bush's Gulf Coast recovery operation toured Southern University's New Orleans campus on Friday, visiting mobile homes that serve as classrooms and a gym where the hip-high water mark is a stark reminder of Hurricane Katrina's destruction.

Donald Powell donned a blue SUNO baseball cap as he visited the campus, which took on as much as 11 feet of water after the storm hit Aug. 29, 2005.

While other New Orleans universities have since been able to resume classes on their main campuses, SUNO has been holding classes in 26 trailers.

Chancellor Victor Ukpolo said it can be "demoralizing" to have to return to the portable campus day after day, and he pressed for more federal relief money........
