Ohio Rep. Ney pleads guilty
Edited on Fri Sep-15-06 09:26 AM by maddezmom

WASHINGTON - Rep. Bob Ney (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, pleaded guilty Friday to making false statements and conspiracy to commit fraud and violating post-employment restrictions for former congressional aides.

Ney abandonded months of defiant denials to admit guilt in the congressional corruption probe spawned by disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Ney becomes the first lawmaker to admit wrongdoing in the election-year investigation.

Ney had consistently denied any wrongdoing in the investigation, an insistence that he maintained even after his former chief of staff pleaded guilty in May. The aide, Neil Volz, confessed to conspiring to corrupt the congressman and others with trips and other aid. Volz became a business partner of Abramoff after leaving the congressional payroll.

WASHINGTON - Rep. Bob Ney (news, bio, voting record) agreed Friday to plead guilty to federal criminal charges he made false statements and conspired to commit fraud and violate federal lobbying laws in the congressional corruption probe spawned by disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Ney, R-Ohio, had defiantly denied the charges for months. Now he faces up to 10 years in prison. The Justice Department said prosecutors will recommend that he serve 27 months based on federal sentencing guidelines. Ney became the first lawmaker to admit wrongdoing in the election-year investigation.

Ney agreed to plead guilty to making false statements and conspiracy to commit "wire and mail fraud," make false statements and violate post-employment restrictions for former congressional staff members.

Ney signed the plea agreement Wednesday, but it was not approved by the Justice Department or filed with the U.S. court until Friday.

We need a net gain of 15 seats to take back the House. This one just got delivered to us on a silver platter.

24. What about Duke Cunningham?
And there's Mike Scanlon, former aide for The Hamper. What a tangled web we weave...

Here's a good resource to use in trying to keep track of all this:

http://www.dccc.org/gopauctionhouse/main.html

They haven't yet updated Ney at the site to show he is guilty.

25. Right, but...
We're pointing out places where Democrats can pick up House seats due to Republicans vacating them. That didn't work out too well in Cunningham's district.

10. He's blaming alcoholism
Rep. Robert W. Ney (R-Ohio) is expected to plead guilty in the coming days to charges stemming from his association with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and he will blame a long-standing problem with alcohol for behavior that spiraled down to illegality, sources close to the congressman said last night.

Ney, known in Abramoff-related court documents as "Representative No. 1," checked into a rehabilitation clinic for alcoholism yesterday, a senior House official and personal friend said yesterday. Under pressure from Republican leaders worried about losing his seat, Ney announced this summer that he would retire from Congress at the end of the year.

13. Ney goes right to the stolen election (s)
He rammed through HAVA ..... 70% + of our vote is now counted on Diebold & EES
Stopped paper trails
Claimed that the Americans w/ Disabilities acts made it important to have e voting
... while doing this hired a blind person w/ Diebold money to make his case
Had staff that worked with & for him as they worked @ the White House & for Diebold
Stopped John Conyers from getting subpoena powers to look @ Ohio 04
Held a "show trial" in Columbus to allow republican operatives from a phony voting
rights group to muddy the waters.

1 charge only? maybe he is singing?????????????

He should be tried, convicted, and punished accordingly.

Ney is not just your everyday corrupt republican crook.

especially since he admits he sold his office.

He sold out cheaper than Randy "Duke" Cunningham but he hurt the people just as bad.
