2. Don't get too excited...
Georgia'a voter ID law was struck down...and then un-struck down. They've still yet to make a call as to whether it will be used in this coming election, but it's going into effect for sure at the next election :(

4. Wouldn't a photo ID requirement prevent
Amish from voting? Many, if not most, Amish believe the Bible's prohibition to graven images extends to portrait photos.

15. Yes it would
but do they vote? I honestly don't know.

I also don't know if there are Amish in MO. I know there are Mennonites. But I am not sure about Amish.

38. Conservative, yes, but they are also VERY VERY BIG on
separation of church and state, IIRC.

Anabaptists (particularly the Amish) are opposed to forcing religion on anyone against their wishes.

39. They are also pacifists but
it is widely held that the small percentage of Amish that do vote have done so lately while ignoring or excusing the "war" issue and instead concentrating on the abortion and other "social" issues.

On the national level I doubt that their small numbers have much effect but on the local level they can have a huge impact where they number a significant proportion of the local population, including many areas in my home state Ohio.

5. Cool. Here's a snip of the story...
Missouri's new voter ID law was found unconstitutional Thursday by Cole County Circuit Judge Richard Callahan.

Senate Bill 1014, signed into law June 14 by Gov. Matt Blunt, required Missourians to show a valid federal or state-issued photo ID to vote this November.

Callahan had combined two lawsuits challenging the law: One claimed the voter ID rule violates the Hancock Amendment against unfunded mandates, the other claiming that the law placed an unconstitutional burden on thousands of Missourians without photo identification. The case is expected to eventually go to the state Supreme Court.

In a statement late Thursday, Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan said, "I am pleased with Judge Callahan's ruling to stop the photo ID law, signed in June by Governor Blunt, from going into effect for the November election. This ruling affirms my concern that the law clearly jeopardizes the constitutional voting rights of many Missourians."

Judge Strikes Down Mo. Voter ID Law
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 6:21 p.m. ET

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A judge struck down Missouri's new voter identification law Thursday as an unconstitutional infringement on the right to vote.

The law required voters to show a federal or Missouri-issued photo ID at the polls, which Cole County Circuit Judge Richard Callahan said was an unconstitutional burden on voters because the paperwork required to get those IDs is not free.

11. The ID MUST be free if the govt wants to require it..
We certainly waste a ton of money on stupid stuff, so if the govt wants s to all have ID, they darned well better provide free access to it..

MOST people have more ID than they will ever need, but there are alwys people who don;t..

I think the US should just set out to get every US citizen a passport and just be done with it..
'
It resolves the issue of citizenship in one fell swoop, and everyday ID would suffice for most things, but when it came time to vote, that passport would remove all doubt about citizenship..

perhaps they fear too many people USING those passports and fleeing :)

28. A free ID was offered as part of this law, BUT it required other paperwork
that you had to pay for, like a certified copy of your birth certificate ($15), and certified copies of any name change paperwork ($15 or more each). Thats what made this law unconstitutional.

Local election officials also objected to the requirement that for this November only, anyone without a photo ID would have to vote with a provisional ballot. They expected a huge increase in provisional ballot use, without the funds to pay for it from the state, which violates the Hancock amendment to the state Constitution. (it basically says that the state cannot impose new duties or requirements on local governments without providing the funds to pay for them)

36. and yet we can afford BILLIONS to kill people in the middle east
but we cannot afford to pay for valid ID for our own people....

as long as the government is not willing to idenitfy and provide valid/legitimate proof of id to its citizens, I cannot see how anyone even listens to them when they complain about :illegals" or "immigrants" of anything related to those issues..

It's all a strawman argument, just used whip partisans into a frenzy :puke:

29. True. A study 2 years ago found only 3 cases of voter fraud
in the last 10 years. I believe it was from a Kansas City paper.

Anyone who really wanted to commit voter fraud would not spend all day driving around to different polling places to impersonate other people.

21. But BEFORE the news broke, there was this !!
A LATimes story that referenced Missouri type problems all over the US brought up at Election Reform.

But some knee-jerk Rovian "What's wrong with Photo Idea" mimes came in from some posters whose states were not so afflicted.

ProgressiveEconomist suggest we carry the meat of that to this thread, below,

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x449427

There is a lot important info there for those who are not in the way of the Rove Express. If, you want to dig further, other site are referenced from the one above.

Mandatory Voter's Photo ID may make sure that Osama bin Laden doesn't vote Novemvber. But, hey, that isn't the problem, is it???

22. This has wreaked havoc on students
To get your "state-issued ID," you need your birth certificate, a passport or your social security card, and proof of residency (such as an electric bill). Plus, the passport doesn't count if it doesn't list Missouri as your state of residence.

I'm so glad this has been shut down.

32. What thugs?
Some people vote all over the state multiple times in MO? Interesting. I have never heard that before. Since I live in KC and these 'thugs' could vote easily in 2 states here in KC, and since I know this is not a problem here, I wonder what problem you are speaking of?? I mean, if it isn't a problem in KC (where it would be so easy) it 's kinda hard to believe it IS a problem in other parts of the state.

31. Some caveats
The state is appealing the decision, and they are requesting a hearing by the state supreme court before November.
If the supreme court is unable to make a decision before the election, this ruling only applies to St Louis City, St Louis County, and Jackson county.

37. Can you confirm? I checked today...
I called the AG's office today. They are all, apparently, still parlez-vous-ing.

My understanding is that the AG does not automatically have to appeal. The only person I have heard quoted as entertaining one is Mark S. "Thor" Hearne, (of the Carter-Baker Hearing fame) who represented the GOP's, and GOP legislator's interests.

Last I saw in KC Star, Hearne had made no move and, if he did, I don't think Jay Nixon is compelled to join him.

Also: I don't know your basis for the following, but would love to find out!

"If the supreme court is unable to make a decision before the election, this ruling only applies to St Louis City, St Louis County, and Jackson county."

Can you fill me in ???
