Spain admits possible CIA flights

Spain admits possible CIA flights

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos has admitted Spain may have been a stopover for secret CIA flights.
But he said there was no evidence any crimes were committed on Spanish soil.

He was the first minister to testify before European MPs investigating claims that the CIA had ran secret jails for terror suspects in Europe.

US President Bush last week admitted that the CIA had run secret jails overseas, but he did not say where they were and they were now empty, he said.

report by human rights watchdog Council of Europe's investigator Dick Marty said earlier this year that the Spanish airport of Palma de Majorca was one of eight international "staging points" for secret prisoner transfers.

A Spanish judge opened an investigation in June to determine whether suspects on secret CIA flights which touched down in Majorca were held illegally or tortured, court officials said at the time.

Spain's relations with the United States have been frosty since Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's Socialists ousted Jose Maria Aznar's conservatives in a 2004 upset and kept an election promise to pull Spanish troops out of Iraq.

3. Looks like Georgie's gonna need that "Save my sorry ass" bill passed
But apparently the Senate isn't willing to play ball. Too bad, George. Nobody wants to pass a law absolving you of your crimes. Mickle strange, isn't it, to be the most powerful man on the face of the earth and you still can't quite get that stain washed off your hands?

5. No doubt.
I imagine that there are a few reasons for clandestine flights.

Wasn't it Corn that said in the months leading up to 3/03 Plame's crew was running around the globe at the drop of a hat trying to follow leads? Supposedly the people in her crew were covert, or at least didn't want their identities rumored around. I wonder if perhaps some of the thousands of chartered flights didn't include some of her people.
