Anti-war protesters to demonstrate during Bush's UN address

1 hour, 47 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AFP) - A leading anti-Iraq war group vowed to go ahead with a protest in New York to coincide with President George W. Bush visiting the United Nations next week, with or without police approval.

New York police said they had refused an initial request by United for Peace and Justice to march from Midtown Manhattan to a square near the United Nations headquarters because it crossed a presidential motorcade route.

"That it an absolute impossibility when the president's in town, you can't have people roaming around a motorcade route," Detective Theresa Farello told AFP. "It was a total impossibility with the New York city police department."

"They were offered a secondary location where they would have to be stationary but they did not want that... they rejected it," she added.

The group said in a statement Thursday it was still seeking permission to hold a rally in a Midtown Manhattan square, but that if police refused permission for them to march, they would go ahead and do so anyway..........

5. "People .........ill be informed of the potential risk of arrest," This
takes guts.

......"People who want to participate in the march will be informed of the potential risk of arrest," the group said.

United for Peace and Justice describes itself as the largest US peace and justice coalition, grouping more than 1,400 member groups, and has been behind some of the largest marches against the Iraq war in the United States.

7. I'm planning on going. Will try to film/take photos.
I've done the unpermitted marches before and seen the cops do some fucked up stuff, but I don't think they should intimidate us into backing down.

8. With cameras getting smaller all the time, bad cops best consider
they could be prosecuted ;)

9. I'll be fine.
I've been through the whole NYC cops threaten to arrest peace protester crap before and I was arrested up at West Point. I've done civil disobedience/media training. I'm pretty seasoned & looking forward to the protest.

10. Maybe this will be the stage for the Airforce
to test its new weapon. (The one where the USAF bigwig said should be tested on unruly US mobs first before being used overseas).
