Bush asks GOP to back terror bills

By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer 50 minutes ago

WASHINGTON -President Bush visited Capitol Hill Thursday where he conferred behind closed doors with House Republicans on legislation to give the government more power to spy on, imprison and interrogate terrorism suspects.

"I will resist any bill that does not enable this plan to go forward," Bush told reporters back at the White House after his meeting with lawmakers.

Bush's proposals would narrow the U.S. legal interpretation of the Geneva Conventions in a bid to allow tougher interrogations and shield U.S. personnel from being prosecuted for war crimes.

But Bush's former secretary of state,
Colin Powell, endorsed efforts to block the president's plan...........

1. (would sheild US personnel-war crimes)
the US morality that we always have thought our country was based on will be gone if this is passed....

Colin Powell wants this blocked because of his similar actions during Vietnam....he is trying to right his past...I applaud him for this but to little too late....where was he when this was initially implemented...

2.  Actually, Bush is succeeding..
The Senate is now ready to make warrantless eavesdropping on
email and phone (all electronic) communications of Americans
with international connections... legal.

This is so sad. All BushInc had to do was take advantage of the
airways and 911 and now the Senate is caving.

By November, the laws will have been changed and he'll be
virtually unimpeachable... for the most criminal, damaging,
and potentially harmful acts ever committed by a president.

3. Why don't the Dems put a hold on this legislation?
It quite obviously violates the law, they could just put a hold on it.

9. Still doesn't make it constitutional
they can pass all the laws they want legalizing it, but its still unconstitutional.

What they are really trying to do is escape being prosecuted if the Dems take Congress.

4. This bill is to protect BushCo against war crimes.
I really think this is a smoke screen so the Senate will offer a compromise bill that only protects US personnel (including BuschCo) against war crimes.

5. maybe the question that should
be asked loudly and publicly is why is Bush holding meetings concerning national secerity behind closed doors with the GOP only. Is national secerity an issue to only be discussed by 1/2 the government? what does this mean to the public?

6. I remember that Bush cut the throats of our military - he said
"No longer will anyone be able to hide behind the excuse 'I was just following orders'."

7. Does that mean we will not punish troops for following orders...?
From Rumsfeld, Cheney, and George W Bush? And if we don't punish the troops, then we would not punish the leaders?? Is that what it's all about?? I wonder?
