Bush: "Texas has lost one of its great daughters"

WASHINGTON President Bush has paid tribute today to Ann Richards, whom he ousted and succeeded as governor in 1995.

..

In a statement issued by the White House, the president said he and first lady Laura Bush "are deeply saddened by the passing of Governor Ann Richards of Texas."

He said Richards "loved Texas, and Texans loved her," and that "as a public servant she earned respect and admiration."

The president said Richards "became a national role model, and her charm, wit and candor brought a refreshing vitality to public life."

After what you and Rove did to her in 1996. You don't care so don't pretend you do. Ann was a TRUE Texan. :grr:

7. Meanwhile, a bit of history between Bush and Richards...
It is probably inappropriate to bring this up on the sad occasion of her death, but the passing of Governor Ann Richards tonight brings to mind one of the most despicable political campaigns in American politics. I have a feeling that Governor Richards would understand, though --- she didn't seem to care too much for stiff propriety --- and it may be just the right moment to remind every Democrat running for office right now to watch his or her back.

The Bush family hated her for saying that "poor George" line at the 1988 convention. When Junior ran against her for governor, Karl Rove got their revenge for them.

9. You know what I liked the most about Ann Richards?
Even though she may have been part of the backroom good ole boy's club, something I really don't know for sure, what I liked about her the most is that no one, but NO ONE, could call out a good ole boy better than Ann Richards. She knew how to cut them down to size with just a quip.

35. he just couldn't bear to say "Texas has lost one of its great governors"
After all the petty, vicious things he and Rove cooked up about her.

I had never really understood what the term "mealymouthed" meant, until now.

23. That's not what he and his minion Rove
were saying during his campaign for gov of Texas. Ann was the first to fall to their dirty smear whisper campaign. They portrayed her as an alcholic(boy now there was the pot calling the kettle black-at least she really DID overcome her addiction and it made her sympathetic to human frailties). They also brought up lesbianism (who cares and yeah, and like it a big deal in the Cheney family). The list went on and on. The only thing Ann was guilty of was being a good public servant and opening the government to everyone. That first election was when I started following closely, the Rove election machine (esp when I discovered the Rove/Nixon/Segretti connection)

I am proud to say I never voted for a Bush....but I voted for Ann every time she ran. I can honestly say Ann was beloved just as I can honestly say Bush is not.

28. stop speaking for Texans, dumbaya
Ann was a better gov, better person and had more balls then an ivy-league-legacy Yankee-born carpet-bagger like you would ever hope to have.

Bye Ann, you did not get to finish your programs, and the smear job the RNC aimed at you was a disgrace. My hope is you are where you should be now...
