Ann Richards dead

On edit:

Now breaking, former Texas Governor Ann Richards has died.

RIP

second edit:

CNN banner:

Former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, a Democrat who went from homemaker to national political celebrity and who lost the 1994 gubernatorial race to George W. Bush, has died from cancer, a family spokeswoman told AP.

In four years as governor, Richards championed what she called the "New Texas," appointing more women and more minorities to state posts than any of her predecessors.

She appointed the first black University of Texas regent; the first crime victim to join the state Criminal Justice Board; the first disabled person to serve on the human services board; and the first teacher to lead the State Board of Education. Under Richards, the fabled Texas Rangers pinned stars on their first black and female officers.

She polished Texas' image, courted movie producers, championed the North American Free Trade Agreement, oversaw an expansion of the state prison system, and presided over rising student achievement scores and plunging dropout rates.

She took time out to celebrate her 60th birthday by earning her motorcycle driver's license.

Throughout her years in office, her personal popularity remained high. One poll put it at more than 60 percent the year she lost to Bush.

Ann's famous speech about Bush was in 1988, not in 1992. I corrected subject line accordingly. The sound bite is being replayed on CNN.

and really hard to get too upset about considering the CIC should take responsibility for the deaths he has caused. Shit, just the number of soldiers without arms or legs or eye should be enough for the nation to at least demand his impeachment. Whatever that Third Reich or Wave of Christianity he's talking about, he ain't gonna get much sympathy, right?

261. Done stereotyping yet?
Obviously you have a very "good understanding" of what liberals are about, and seeing among hundreds of liberal posts one that matches the stereotype spoonfed to you by Rush you pounce, "validating" your conservative heroes' rants . You don't get individuality, do you?

Welcome to DU, you might learn a few things if you open your mind just a bit.

Rest in peace, Ann.

114. Don't forget the Ginger Rogers quote - "backwards and in high heels"
She grabbed the national spotlight with her keynote address at the 1988 Democratic National Convention when she was the Texas state treasurer. Richards won cheers from delegates when she reminded them that Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, "only backwards and in high heels."

279. The quote didn't originate with Ann Richards. Good line, though.
I was about to post that Ginger herself said it, then looked it up. It began with a cartoon:

This Frank and Ernest cartoon is reportedly the origin of the now-famous statement often wrongly attributed to Ginger herself, that she did everything Fred Astaire did, only backwards and in high heels. Former Governor of Texas, Ann Richards, is also often wrongly credited for this quote, because she used it in her keynote address to the Democratic National Convention in 1988.

26. Houston Chronicle
Former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, the witty and flamboyant Democrat who went from homemaker to national political celebrity, died tonight at her home surrounded by her family after a battle with cancer, a family spokeswoman said. She was 73.

Richards was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in March and underwent chemotherapy treatments.

Richards had said she entered politics to help others - especially women and minorities who were often ignored by Texas' male-dominated establishment.

``I did not want my tombstone to read, 'She kept a really clean house.' I think I'd like them to remember me by saying, 'She opened government to everyone,' `` Richards told an interviewer shortly before leaving office in January 1995.

Richards served as Texas governor for one term. She lost her re-election bid to Republican George W. Bush.

52. She was such a beautiful lady, and a tough woman.

I met her while in college at Baylor. She was from the area. Before she announced her candidacy for governor, but while speculation was HIGH, she was to be the keynote speaker at a sheriff's convention in Waco. I was a 19 year old kid who was raised a Democrat, but didn't know a thing about politics.

That first class lady, at an event that was more about HER than anything due to the buzz about her running, took 10+ solid minutes out to talk one-on-ne with the caterer's waitress (me), while politicians, activists and donors waited impatiently for her attention.

She made me feel like I was the most important person in the room that night, and I will never, ever forget her for that.

I love you, Ann. Say hi to my mom up there.

I think *'s dad had already stuffed the ballot box in Texas when he mysteriously upset the vote for governor, in spite of looking like the 1st class idiot he always has, losing debate after debate, being ridiculed in the news and basically not even being taken seriously.

Truly a remarkable woman; the REAL Texas, not this assbrain Suburban driving gated community republican texas we live in now.

We'll miss you, Ann.

What you saw was what you got. There was no difference between public or private persona (except the jokes might have been a tad more uh interesting).

59. RIP Governor Richards -- your legacy will live forever
It was she who looked into the CNN camera one year before the election 2000 debacle and warned the citizens of this country to beware of the use of the absentee ballot in the upcoming Presidential election. She unblinkingly said that was the way George W. Bush had defeated her for the Governorship in Texas, floating in an overabundance of absentee ballots, of dubious origin, at the last moment, in order to win that race against her under questionable circumstances. It was something to keep an eye out for in the upcoming election for the highest office in the land, she warned.

Sadly, enough people did not hear her. Had they heard her and had they truly listened, perhaps it would have caused them to consider perhaps George W. Bush* was capable of winning an election at all costs. And perhaps someone who could take an election at all costs might be capable of launching wars at all costs. Had only more heard her and taken her words seriously, George W. Bush* might not be occupying the Oval House today, as opposed to Al Gore presiding there.

If only ....

It took a lot of guts for her to do this but guts she had, as well as a style that was unique to her soul. She might have checked out of this earth but she left a lot of her presence in our political arena to inspire us to continue to fight the good fight, just as she did. A role model for us all to the very end -- that was Ann Richards.

Rest in peace, Ann Richards, we shall not forget you.

It is so amazing who so much is still the same. How people are still concerned with how they will pay for the kids school clothes. That kids deserve good public school where students can learn and teachers can teach. We want to believe that Our parents will have a good retirement. Live without fear the an illness will bankrupt us.

And Yes, Ginger Rogers did do everything Fred Astaire did, only backward and in high heels.

Ann you will be missed.

that is, before you, anyway. She and Willie Nelson are my live-forevers.
She was remarkably easy to love. I knew she had cancer; also Molly Ivins. I just prayed that they both would be cancer survivors. Bye, Ann. Rest knowing you made a difference and were well loved. Thank you for everything.

After they voted for the guy who defamed her and "McCained her".

She would have told them to rot in hell. They voted for everything she was against.

For them to try to show her appreciation now is beyond the borders of good taste. Go to hell freepers. You were against everything she believed in. You voted for everything she was against.

I thank her for her tireless work for choice, democracy, and the poor.

I loved being able to vote for her in 1994- my very first vote against Shrub. And my second against a Bush.

Rest in Peace darlin'.

My favorite Ann quote:
I am delighted to be here with you this evening because after listening to George Bush all these years, I figured you needed to know what a real Texas accent sounds like. <1988 keynote address, Democratic National Convention>

I was lucky enough to have spent a few minutes with her on several occasions, before, during, and after her term as Governor. She was never anything less than her public persona.

Ann ruled, told it like it was, and took it to 'em in a state that the GOP is now convinced is steadfastly Republican. It ain't - Ann proved that: liberals can lead with aplomb and humor.

Edited on Thu Sep-14-06 04:52 AM by girl gone mad
back before I was old enough to vote.

Her opponent made a ridiculously sexist comment. She would have won anyways, but his slip-up probably sealed the deal.

I worked for her again in '93. I was so young and idealistic, I really didn't think baby Bush (as we nicknamed him then) had a chance. We all underestimated Rove and his adroitness at dirty politics.

Ann was an angel, through and through. I didn't know her well, but I spent enough time in her presence behind the scenes to observe how she treated those around her. She was always kind and courteous. She reserved her famously sharp tongue for those who truly deserved it, those in power. She was a genuine person, not some political pr creation.

The last time I saw her was in 1998. She was locked in conversation with a shop clerk and I didn't interrupt. She looked right at me, waved and smiled with her big, warm smile.

Sometimes you meet a public figure and they seem small, insignificant. It's a cliche, but Ann Richards really was larger than life.

If some of our so-called Democratic "leaders" would have had even a smidgen of her courage, our country would be in a better place right now. She was never afraid to speak the truth or say what was on her mind, and needed to be said.

She cannot be replaced as she was larger than life. Only her bravery can, and should, be emulated by all of us in taking up her cause of fighting for justice and against the slime ball BFEE and their horrendous policies.

200. From today's Houston Chronicle....
On the front page:

Sept. 14, 2006, 2:30AM
1933 ANN RICHARDS 2006
Groundbreaking politician, quintessential Texas woman
The feisty homemaker who rose to governor dies after 6-month fight with cancer

By R.G. RATCLIFFE and ANNE MARIE KILDAY
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Austin Bureau

.....Richards was the quintessential Texas woman, with a sassy homespun charm, sharp wit and tough pioneer spirit. With bright silver hair, a weathered face and an affinity for cobalt blue suits and pearls, Richards was instantly recognizable to national television audiences.

As a Democratic politician, Richards' 1990 race for governor against Republican cowboy oilman Clayton Williams became a battle of the sexes. Her victory symbolically broke down gender barriers for a generation of Texas women who were seeking professional careers.

Richards labeled her administration the "New Texas," appointing more Hispanics, blacks and women to state boards and commissions than any previous governor. She pushed for increases in public education funding and promoted business expansion in the state.

A recovering alcoholic, Richards also pressed lawmakers to increase funding for drug and alcohol abuse treatment programs.

And more on her character:

Richards remembered as "a true Texas hero"

By ANNE MARIE KILDAY
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

...Richards was an avid Lady Longhorns fan, and frequently brought her granddaughter, Lily, named after her friend comedienne Lily Tomlin, to the basketball games at the University of Texas at Austin.

She also loved attending movies, although she was known to talk too loudly for her friends' comfort. Still, Richards recently made a filmed "announcement" for the Alamo Draught House, a theater in Austin.

The announcement shows Richards leaving her office and walking into a movie theater, as she says: "Turn off your cell phone, or Ann Richards will take your ass out!"

202. She was a tough lady
and a lady all the way.

100% Texan and proud. When I hear the small minded bigots trash the South or Texas, she is one of the people I think of for she is Texas and the South.

"We" got what it's really all about, Ann... the haters never will. Just the mention of your name will always bring a smile... what a legacy!

204. I worked on both of her gubernatorial campaigns.
She was one of the most amazing people I ever met.

You could ask her questions about something and not see her for a month and as soon as she spots you she would remember what you talked about and have gotten further information for you.

During one of her campaign stops, a friend who had worked very, VERY hard for her in Dallas had gotten a busload of folks to east Texas to help pump up the crowd. He had contracted AIDS and hadn't worked quite so hard this time around. People were still tense and leary about AIDS and he had been having a really hard time being sick, worrying about his partner, trying to do what he could for Ann.

And people had started treating him - how do I put this? - respectfully from a distance.

So Ann does her stump speech and reporters start throwing questions at her and she says, "WAIT! I have something to do first!"

She climbed off the stage, walked into the middle of the crowd, threw her arms around Ron and said, "I hear you've been having a rough time. What can I do?"

You could have heard a pin drop and then everybody started cheering and throwing their arms around him.

That meant more to him than she could ever have guessed. He talked about it until the day he died.

Rest in peace, Ann.

Unlike the New England implant George W. Bush, Mrs. Richards did represent the more compassionate side of texas... which bush and his ilk crushed to death apon rolling into office. I was doing some research a few months ago on Ann and saw she had that type of cancer, it has a very high mortality rate... I was sad then at the prospect of losing just a real lady of heartland, and its even sadder in reality.. I hope we take up her banner and fight for 06 in her name.

221. I moved from Tulsa to Dallas in June 1994 to get better wages
for my secretarial work. Was a topnotch exec sec and Tulsa's job market was fit only for bottomfeeders at the time. Doubled my normal salary by moving to Big D although I had to work my rearend off for it. No prob for me, it was a great time I still remember with a lot of fondness.

I already knew a lot about Ann Richards then, being from a neighboring state and having all my mom's side of the family from Texas. I had even lived there before in several different regions of the state, and was an Aggie (Texas A&M).

It was easy to sense the mood and preference of the people of Texas in 1994 everywhere I went when it came to Ann, and I went a lot of places because I started out "temping" at first. I was so busy I didn't even bother to find time (and courage to face Dallas traffic even one extra time) to get myself registered to vote right away. The reason was that it was SO OBVIOUS that Ann would be re-elected for governor that I didn't have to worry about making sure I voted!

Dubya, or "Baby Bush" as he was dubbed (someone upthread noted this), was NOT expected by ANYONE -- including Repukes among the general public -- to defeat her. Not in any way, shape, or form did he have the public backing, respect or love from the citizens of the great state of Texas to honestly WIN that election!

He certainly had no legitimate EXPERIENCE that would make anyone think he could govern. All he had was his family's $$$, name, and KKKarl Rove -- but it turned out that was all it took. F'ing thieves probably burned the midnight oil many a night plotting and carrying out their many devious dirty tricks to steal that election.

I didn't realize Ann had ever publicly commented on that theft, even in her oblique, dignified, and witty way, but I figured she surely KNEW it.

I remember the next morning when I awoke to find the Chimp had been SELECTED and forced upon us all, it was like living in Bizarroworld. Everyone at work was walking around looking stunned and sad. Like they'd just learned of a loved one's death -- like we feel today after the bad news yesterday. I think we all knew that Texas had suffered a terrible blow the day before, and many were probably wondering how on earth we let that happen....

Harbinger of things to come from those remorseless, dirty-trick-playing, vote-stealing, ballot-tampering, citizen-intimidating assholes who had their way in 1994. I don't for a minute think Ann Richards' "defeat" in 1994 was related to the broader situation where Dems were swept out and Repugs swept into office across the nation that year. She was so popular I don't think anyone of either party thought she could be beaten, especially by the opponent she had, in her re-election bid. And I know for certain that a great many R's VOTED FOR HER! She was just conservative enough to suit most centrist folks, moderates, the "regular people" who populate Texas, by and large.

During the campaign, I remember thinking Junior was such a LIGHTWEIGHT, known only for his family name and being part-owner of the Texas Rangers -- and that he was so clearly a doofus of the highest order -- so surely he'd garner few votes. I didn't know about Karl Rove then, but in Texas, we learned about him the hard way long before the rest of the nation suffered the same rude awakening.

Goodnight, Ann, you were one of a kind! May other ladies from Texas or anywhere else be inspired by you and follow in your footsteps someday! I think it's important to note that Ann virtually NEVER put her own foot in her mouth when she spoke, formally or in casual conversation or on radio appearances. She was tactful, witty, gracious, and stopped far short of ever being crude, rude, and nasty. Imagine how she could have cut the Chimp to ribbons with her tongue if she'd so chosen.

That's very important for us to remember, I think. No one has come up with memorable verbal gaffs about her upon hearing of her passing. She just didn't make 'em! Nor did she name-call as the troll upthread tried to say. Just was NOT her style -- and that woman had STYLE comin' and goin'~!

225. So long Ann!
Nice story, Vicki. Thanks for sharing.

You nailed it when you said that we (in Texas) honestly did not believe Ann could lose her reelection campaign To Baby Bush because she was so very popular here. I do recall a few blips from the Chimpster campaign group, however--one being a "rumor" going around that Ann was a lesbian. It didn't seem to hurt her at the time, although in hindsight the Rovian tactic seems obvious.

I met Ann in an airport the first time, before she ran for governor in 1988. I lived in Washington, DC, then but was excited that she might run for Texas governor. She told me that she was "thinking about it" during our 10-minute walk together through the terminal. A year later, she by chance met my mother and sister in East Texas and when my mom started to tell Ann how I had met her in the airport the year before, Ann remembered my name and what we had discussed! My mother was SO proud!

After that, I corresponded with Ann via letters a few times. She kept asking when I was going to come back to Texas. I made it back just in time for her first year as governor. It was a good time to be a Texan.

After she lost to Chimpie, I again saw her while in another airport. I walked up to her and stuck out my hand to say hello, and she responded---calling me by name! At this point, it had been years since I had seen her, so I was overwhelmed. She remembered me after all this time, and after only having met me once in person.

History might be different if Ann had won that reelection bid---for all of us! Meanwhile, may she rest in eternal peace. She was a classy lady who is already sorely missed.

I admit with some embarrassment that I don't normally notice governors that much, but Ann Richards definitely got my attention. I thought she was just a fabulous, fabulous lady, and it blew my mind when Junior actually replaced her in office.

234. A very, very funny story about Ann here:
Ann Richards Had Balls!
by: Glen Maxey
Thu Sep 14, 2006 at 00:55:12 AM CDT
(A number of people have asked and plan to write about memories and stories of Ann Richards. In her honor, I will be promoting selected memories through the day to the front page. Plenty more will be found in comments or the journals. - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

It was 1982 and I was a candidate for the Legislature in Brazos County, an uphill race against the chairman of the House Appropriations committee. The campaign volunteers had already made the decision to go have evening margaritas at the Ramada Inn bar as part of the daily routine, since the campaign sucked.

So one day Erma Jefferson, one of the most outrageous Democrats I had ever met, asked the group if Ann Richards could beat the incumbent in her race for State Treasurer. Someone in the group responded, "Hell no. You gotta have balls to win in Texas!". The group laughed. Fast forward three months.

.... more....

Asked once what she might have done differently had
she known she was going to be a one-term governor, Richards grinned.

``Oh, I would probably have raised more hell.''

I have heard so many politicians talk on both sides that most of the
time I tune out stump speeches and q. & a. w/ reporters but I almost
always made a point to listen to Ann.

I will miss her so much. I remember seeing her on C-Span during the '04 Democratic Convention where she was pleading with everyone to track down every unmarried women you could, get her registered and to the polls to vote for Kerry.

None of the male establishment listened....still not listening. They're still trying to get angry white males to vote Democratic. Still won't focus on women voters. I really do want to take a 2 x 4 and smack the Jackass upside the head so to get its attention on this issue.

Maybe Ann is in a place where she can have an effect on the Dems...she had a most magnificent spirit.

247. It was just a passing comment last week......
When describing the memorial service for Nellie Connelly, the broadcaster noted that all the living Texas governors were there to pay tribute except Ann Richards. My heart sank a bit and I hoped it was just a rough patch. Esophageal cancer can be disfiguring and even strong folk can retreat socially. But Ann wouldn't. This was the woman that said being pretty was good, but being smart was better. The only was she would miss paying respects to Nellie was if she was on death's door.

Texas has lost 2 iconic women in the space of 2 weeks. Nellie was your Highland Park aunt. She would have you over to tea and discuss your new college beau. Even if she thought he was a poor match , she wouldn't say much about it, hug you as you left and slip a $20 in your pocket. Ann was your Austin (or Houston) aunt. She would have you over and feed you. When you brought up the subject of your college beau, she would not mince words and tell you he was a bad choice. When he broke up with you...you'd have to talk with Aunt ann. She would never tell you I told you so. No, she'd poor you a stiff drink, tell you what a rat he was and have you laughing as tears were running down your cheeks. You'd tell your success to Aunt Nellie, but you'd share your failures with Aunt Ann.

I identified deeply with Ann. Not only did we share the same name, her birthday was Sept 1 and mine was Sept 2. We both shared a passion for politics and have the same sharp tongued wit and humour that comes from recognizing our human frailties and being able to laugh at ourselves. We had both figured out that the way to deal with the good ol boys was to get right in there with them and not be afraid to mix it up. Ann understood that you can be tough as nails and still be a woman. She was honest and shared her personal battles in the hopes that she could be seen as a positive role model for others. I saw her at a rally once but my regret is that I never got to personally shake her hand and thank her for making Texas a better place for everyone. She was much beloved by 'the great unwashes masses'. That is something her predecessor,George Bush, will never understand.

You can read more about this wonderful woman (and send condolences) at

http://www.khou.com /

We mourn her passing

268. No one said it to the Bushies quite like Ann
Ann on Poppy: "He was born with a silver foot in his mouth."

Ann on DimSon: "He was born on third base and thought he hit a triple."

Wonder if she had any catty remarks about Babs?!

270. Her entire life was one of dedicated public advocacy. What a great loss.
As a native Texan who discovered The Texas Observer as a teenager, who struggled there in the great fights of the 1960's, I have known about this woman for most of my life and have admired her just as long.

This was a great American. She was the kind of Democrat that never needed to be cajoled to do the right thing. She was never a DINO. She was simply the best.

I can't stand to know that she's not with us, fighting with us.

Ann Richards, you inspired me to keep punching all these years.

273. My friend Ann - Rest in Peace
I've been absent from this board for quite a while but must give my sincerest condolences to Gov Richards' family. You see, she was someone I greatly admired. Someone I knew personally from my days in Texas and someone so special there can not ever be another. I cried upon hearing the news this morning of her passing and I don't believe I'll get over it any time soon. May God cradle you and may you finally find the lasting peace you so richly deserve.

To Ann's children and grandchildren - you can be proud of the woman she was and what she stood for so valiantly. She gave many of us so many lasting memories and also so many wonderful laughs. She was a pioneer and I will always be grateful for her wisdom, her wit and her unswavering courage through the hard fought battle she has now lost.

Rest in Peace, Ann - I will miss you.

277. He's running Clayton Williams Energy Inc.
which is worth about $1 billion.

His campaign died the day he said, "Rape is like bad weather. As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it."

I was working a phone bank for Ann one night when CW's phone bank called my phone bank phone. That was a very amusing evening.

292. Chimp inherited a $2 Billion surplus from Gov Richards..and he blew it
A reporter asked him in Nov 2000 what he would tell the convening TX lawmakers in Jan 2001 about how TX had gone into the red financially on his watch..chimp's response: "I hope not to be here then".
The Texas he took over from Gov Richards had a $2 BILLION surplus...chimpass did to the Texas budget exactly what he has done to the USA's... depleted and overdrawn. From an article below: "Had I known George Bush would have won," she quipped after her defeat, "I would have spent it."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?view=DETAILS&grid=&xml=/news/2006/09/15/db1502.xml

In 1982 she was elected treasurer of Texas, an office notorious for the cronyism and incompetence which attended it. But by introducing automation and negotiating with the banks, Ann Richards saved the state millions of dollars in interest, and came to the attention of the national Democratic leaders. She seconded Walter Mondale's nomination for the presidency; after his overwhelming defeat, she joined the party's national policy steering committee.

Ann Richard's scraped home with 51 per cent, and set about creating a "new Texas", tackling such issues as the environment, waste disposal and regulation of industry with gusto. She also appointed large numbers of ethnic minorites and women to state boards and bodies. But as well as these liberal priorities, she made it her business to reduce the influence of lobbyists on the legislature, and to tackle the overmanning of state agencies. She endorsed budget cuts and the streamlining of public bodies, though the underlying budgetary difficulties in Texas were never fully addressed.

Even so, towards the end of her term in office, the budget was in surplus, educational standards were rising, crime was falling (she built a great many prisons) and Ann Richards enjoyed a 62 per cent approval rating.

http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/washington/stories/091506dntexrichardsbush.3154728.html

'New Texas': In 1991, she ushered in "The New Texas," pledging that her administration would reflect the true face and diversity of Texas. Her appointees were 46 percent women, 20 percent Hispanic and 15 percent black – a high-water mark still unmatched. Under her predecessor, 80 percent of appointees had been Anglo males.

Shaking up Austin: As governor, she shook up the old-boy business establishment in Austin. She helped create a lawyer's post at the Insurance Commission to fight for consumers and named environmentalists to the clean air and water board. She appointed a nonhunter to the Parks and Wildlife Commission and a crime victim to the Department of Criminal Justice. She named former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan to be her ethics czar and to set a high bar for public service in her administration.

Court orders, deficits: When she entered office, several major state agencies, including education and criminal justice, were under federal court orders for failure to meet obligations. She also was facing a $5 billion deficit. When she left in 1995, the court orders had been lifted, and the state boasted a $2 billion surplus. "Had I known George Bush would have won," she quipped after her defeat, "I would have spent it."

291. This is for you Ann.

There's a yellow rose in Texas, that I am going to see,
Nobody else could miss her, not half as much as me.
She cried so when I left her, it like to broke my heart,
And if I ever find her, we nevermore will part.

She's the sweetest little rosebud that Texas ever knew,
Her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew;
You may talk about your Clementine, and sing of Rosalee,
But the yellow rose of Texas is the only girl for me.

When the Rio Grande is flowing, the starry skies are bright,
She walks along the river in the quiet summer night:
I know that she remembers, when we parted long ago,
I promise to return again, and not to leave her so.

She's the sweetest little rosebud that Texas ever knew,
Her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew;
You may talk about your Clementine, and sing of Rosalee,
But the yellow rose of Texas is the only girl for me.

Oh now I'm going to find her, for my heart is full of woe,
And we'll sing the songs together, that we sung so long ago
We'll play the bango gaily, and we'll sing the songs of yore,
And the yellow rose of Texas shall be mine forevermore.

She's the sweetest little rosebud that Texas ever knew,
Her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew;
You may talk about your Clementine, and sing of Rosalee,
But the yellow rose of Texas is the only girl for me.

293. The funeral is set for Monday afternoon at noon Central Time:
AUSTIN - Friends, family and one-time political foe President Bush on Thursday mourned the death of Demo-cratic former Gov. Ann Richards, who died a day earlier of esophageal cancer.

Public funeral services for Richards will be held at the University of Texas Frank Erwin Center on Monday. She will lie in state in the Texas Capitol rotunda Saturday and Sunday.

Former President Clinton will accompany Richards' casket to the Capitol on Saturday, Richards family spokeswoman Cathy Bonner said Thursday. Richards chaired the Democratic convention that nominated Clinton for president.

U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros will speak at Richards' funeral. They will be joined by former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk, who served in Richards' administration, and longtime friend, society columnist Liz Smith, Bonner said.
