WHITE HOUSE, GOP SENATORS CLASH
Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 05:47 PM by themartyred

WASHINGTON - Negotiations between the White House and a trio of powerful GOP senators snagged Wednesday over Bush administration demands that Congress reinterpret the nation's treaty obligations to allow tough CIA interrogations of terrorism suspects.

Sen. John Warner (news, bio, voting record), chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said his panel would meet Thursday to finalize an alternative to President Bush's plan to prosecute terror suspects and redefine acts that constitute war crimes. Warner said he was aware the White House may come out in opposition of his legislation.

The Supreme Court ruled in June that Bush's court system established to prosecute terrorism suspects was illegal and violated the Geneva Conventions. Since then, Congress and the administration have been drafting legislation that would authorize Bush to continue with the military commissions.

"The credibility of the United States is very much a factor in this negotiation," said Warner. The Virginia Republican said another Supreme Court ruling against Bush's policies in the war on terror would deal a "severe blow."

1. What kind of sentences can these......
military commisions hand out? Death?? How will we ever know the truth? If these military commisions are allowed to murder these people without transparancy will the world ever forgive us? Will the muslims ever forgive us? Will this make us safer?? I think not on all counts.

3. The WH wants to dilute Article 3 of the G. Conv.

....At issue primarily is the administration's suggestion to rule that an existing ban on cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment meets the nation's obligations under the treaty. A section of the Geneva Conventions telling with prisoner treatment, Common Article 3, goes much farther. Officials have said they believe Common Article 3 is too vague.

Graham said CIA Director Michael Hayden told Republican senators this week that the CIA interrogation program would fail unless Congress passed Bush's plan — an assertion Graham said was "over the line."

The White House legislation would cause a "ripple effect of monumental proportions" because it would invite other nations to revise their interpretation of the Geneva Convention standards, said Graham, R-S.C.

11. WELCOME TO DU!
and may I say it, "BINGO!"

that is an EXCELLENT POINT! They want the revision of what torture is (may I say, "DUH!") so they can get out of the horribly sinful things they've done. Watching that Lauer interview on youtube last night made me SICK when Bush got all defensive when Lauer pushed the water boarding torture question. Drowning is a scary thing that bothers a lot of folks, and to do that to our captives is wackjob shit. I'm so ashamed of Mr. "Christian" Bush....

he's about as much a Christian as Hitler was.

9. Sen. Warner, misery loves company..
Sign and go along with the program your fearless leader has designated for you at your peril.
He will not hang alone; you will be there right beside him.

When the World Court comes for you; what will you say?:

"He made me do it?"

If you and yours lack the courage to do what right;
Please don't stand idly by, Speak UP, so we can hear you.

Perhaps they can get a convention rate. The more the merrier. Anyone who signs legislation that Violates the Geneva Convention will get their nads handed to them.
I can't believe any Congress-critter could fall for that distribution of liability ploy from Cheney.

interesting indeed. true, they sign a bill authorizing inhumane torture and they risk the US causing the world to disobey all global rules (if they want to be as "evil" as our gov't has been the past 6 years)...

cannot WAIT to see them get in trouble for this...

Keith's gotta do something about this story.

14. This part: White House arranges extraordinary conference call for press:
The White House said Warner's proposal would undermine the nation's ability to interrogate prisoners and arranged an extraordinary conference call with reporters in which the nation's top intelligence official criticized Warner's plan.

Just feed them what you want them to print George, it's worked so far.

(Wow.)

19. Screw you Senator Warner...
you're a doddering old man and you need to resign from the Senate, because you don't deserve the office anymore.

The credibility of the United States went down the shit hole long ago thanks to sniveling cowards like you who toed the Bushco lieing line while people died, and continue to die.

Whatever integrity you may have had in my eyes is gone the same way.
