Teacher Arrested, Accused Of Anti-Islam Tirade

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/education/9839832/detail.html?rss=den&psp=nationalnews">Teacher Arrested, Accused Of Anti-Islam Tirade

GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- A Maryland substitute teacher was arrested after an alleged anti-Islamic tirade in front of high school students.

Carol Joan McVey, 49, was charged with resisting arrest, trespassing, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.

Police said McVey became upset when she heard some students at Gaithersburg High School, who were being assisted by another teacher, practicing a speech and using some Arabic words.

The Washington Post said she reacted after overhearing the group utter an Islamic greeting of peace.

Charging documents allege McVey shouted, "Islam doesn't mean peace, it means killing everyone for peace" and "Because of you, our families died in New York!"

It's not known if anyone who heard the alleged remarks is Muslim....

What's her FReeper handle?

3. That's sad. I hope she gets given help, because she's clearly unbalanced
I hope she hasn't degraded to the point where she's dangerous.

6. Arrested?!
For voicing an opinion? JEEEZUZ!

Dismissed? Yes, depending on how she said it, that might certainly be appropriate.

7. She wasn't arrested for voicing an opinion.
She was arrested for refusing to vacate the grounds after they dismissed her.

Police said she refused to leave and was escorted from the school by the educational facilities officer.

While being escorted from the building, McVey allegedly yelled at a Hispanic teacher about the inappropriateness of speaking to students in languages other than English.

Once the substitute teacher was outside, police said, she tried to re-enter the school and the school's educational facilities officer attempted to place her under arrest, but she resisted and an additional officer was called to assist.

14. Indeed. The headline does imply she was fired for expressing her opinion

It was either laziness on the part of the newspaper, or intentional spin on their part.

:hi:

but if a teacher was spouting anti-semitic remarks you can bet the likes of O'Reilly & Hannity would be wanting her fired.

11. One of those things I don't get about conservatives
They feel that all muslims are responsible for islamic terrorism, yet they don't want any american kids to learn anything about Islam.

Isn't it important to know your enemy and what they believe, and to learn to differentiate between the various factions, peaceful and otherwise, within Islam? Obviously, you would have different levels of understanding with different ages, but my social studies classes always discussed some basics about people in whatever country we were studying, including religion, history, culture, ethnicity, trade/economy, etc.

12. I agree but...
"...and to learn to differentiate between the various factions, peaceful and otherwise, within Islam? "

many Conservatives don't think there is such a thing as a peaceful muslim... or they don't care.

Which makes me wonder what is there real goal of being in Afghanistan? I thought they were over there to save those people and make their lives better. If that is the case, what is the harm about learning a little bit more about the people you are trying to save.

I lean to the right in some ways... but the ignorance, intollerance and sometimes racist views of many conservatives have me shaking my head sometimes.

15. Simple:
"Which makes me wonder what is there real goal of being in Afghanistan?"

Simple answer: the Oil Pipeline.

Why has this country always gone to war since the rise of the Military-Industrial-Infotainment Complex?

Money. Power. Hegemony.

Same as it ever was.......

20. No doubt...
...just a fringe benefit to help fund your friendly neighborhood CIA.

But I would place that, and having a bigger footprint in the ME, as secondary to the oil and it's distribution network.

It all works together for a richer power elite, nonetheless...

;)
