Colorado rule limits union's contributions

By Valerie Richardson
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
September 13, 2006

DENVER -- Colorado Secretary of State Gigi Dennis is taking on the state's powerful unions over their anonymous donations on behalf of their members to political campaigns.

Mrs. Dennis, a Republican, ruled last month that small-donor committees, the source of most union contributions, must have permission from contributors before they can use dues money for political campaigns.

She also required such committees to attest that the donations came from U.S. citizens, as mandated by the state constitution. Small-donor committees typically bundle contributions of less than $20, which are not subject to disclosure laws.

State Democrats and union leaders have fired back with a lawsuit that goes before a hearing tomorrow in Denver District Court.

1. That idiot Dennis is doing everything she can to bail out Both Ways Bob
Yesterday she said, amidst swirling rumors that Beauprez is going to quit the race, that any early/absentee votes cast for a candidate who later drops out would be automatically transferred to the candidate chosen by the party committee to replace the dropout. Now this. Ken Gordon has got to win the SoS race in Colorado. I think Ritter is in fine shape anyway, so if you've got $$$ to donate in Colorado, send it to Ken Gordon's campaign.

Flight-suit Bob is considering withdrawing? Why?

3. Maybe he is and maybe he isn't
But the rumors are everywhere. My rumor-mill of choice is www.coloradopols.com which has some wacky posters but seems to be rather well-connected. Both-ways probably won't withdraw, but people are talking about it; the Republicans because they realize it is their only chance to put up someone who might win, and the Democrats because seeing BWB drop out would be pretty satisfying, even if only temporarily.

Regardless, Dennis' maneuvering here is really securing her reputation as a partisan hack. Let's give 'em all the boot on Nov. 7th, eh?
