Suicide bomber targets Iraq army recruits, kills 13
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A suicide bomber blew himself up inside a minibus full of Iraqi army recruits in Baghdad on Monday, killing 13 people and wounding seven, police said.

Police said the bomber boarded the minibus outside an army recruiting center in western Baghdad and detonated his explosives.

Police sources said all the dead appeared to be recruits from Muthanna base in central Baghdad, which has been attacked by suicide bombers in the past. The men had boarded an ordinary public service minibus at a bus stop outside the complex.

Recruitment centers for the Iraqi army and police, key elements of Washington's strategy for pulling out its own troops, have been frequent targets for insurgents from the Sunni Arab minority, including al Qaeda Islamists, who oppose the rise of the Shi'ite Muslim majority in U.S.-backed elections.

Iraq recruiting center blast kills 16

By SINAN SALAHEDDIN, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 31 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A mini bus carrying a bomb exploded outside an army recruiting center in Baghdad and killed 16 people Monday, the deadliest of a string of attacks that left 29 Iraqis dead. A U.S. soldier also died over the weekend.

The mini bus exploded near the northern gate of the al-Muthana recruiting center in central Baghdad, said defense ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Ibrahim al-Obeidi. Seven people were also wounded.

A botched car bombing against a U.S. military convoy in eastern Baghdad killed four Iraqis and wounded three, but injured no Americans, said police Maj. Hamid Mousa.

A U.S. soldier was killed by small arms fire Sunday after his patrol came under attack north of Baghdad, the U.S. military command said Monday.

4. Al-Qaeda mocks US as Iraq toll mounts
A suicide bomber killed 12 people in a minibus transporting Iraqi army recruits on Monday, as al-Qaeda said in a video on the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks that US forces in Iraq were "doomed" to fail.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki will make his first official visit to neighbouring, Shi'ite Iran on Tuesday, a day later than originally planned, an aide said.

Most of the dead in the blast were young recruits who had boarded a public minibus outside the Muthanna base in central Baghdad, which has been targeted in the past by insurgents from the Sunni Arab minority, including al-Qaeda Islamists, who oppose the US-backed Shi'ite-led coalition government.
