NYT/AP: ABC Makes Some Changes to 9 / 11 Series
ABC Makes Some Changes to 9 / 11 Series
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: September 11, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- ABC aired its miniseries ''The Path to 9/11'' on Sunday but made editing changes after former Clinton administration officials complained it contained fabricated scenes about their actions prior to the terrorist attacks.

ABC's editing of the five-hour movie, airing on two successive nights starting Sunday, was evident from the very beginning. Twice, the network de-emphasized the role of the 9/11 commission's final report as source material for the film.

The version that aired Sunday also changed a scene that, in a copy of the movie given to television critics a few weeks ago, indicated President Clinton's preoccupation with his potential impeachment may have affected an effort to go after Osama bin Laden.

In the original scene, an actor portraying White House terrorism czar Richard Clarke shares a limousine ride with FBI agent John O'Neill and tells him: ''The Republicans are going all-out for impeachment. I just don't see in that climate the president's going to take chances'' and give the order to kill bin Laden.

But in the film aired Sunday, Clarke says to O'Neill: ''The president has assured me this ... won't affect his decision-making.''...

I wonder when everything is said and done if it's going to turn out to have been worth it for them.

3. Clinton asked ABC to film the truth. They ignored his wishes.
We won't watch ABC again.

27. They deleted ONE MINUTE out of 5 hours
That according to the sources of Rush Limbaugh, who saw both the original and the "cut" version, and was just happy as could be today at how "devastating" the edited version remained regarding the Clinton legacy.

28. (Sandy Berger was apparently savaged even more
in the original version than in the edited one. He looked bad in what I saw, but somebody said he looked just plain awful in the pre-edit.....maybe that's where he was rumored to have hung up on a CIA field OP who was trying to get a straight answer. I don't recall seeing that in the edited version)

6. Did they have the 'alternate' version already filmed ?

And if so, why ?

Did they anticipate the furor and objections since they new it was falsified and decided to have the alternative versions in the can ready for it ?

7. Doesn't that kind of pin blame on the Republicans?
If they were going for "all out impeachment" and therefore distracting him from terrorism which they seemed to care nothing about until Bush got into office?

8. Why did they even bother if it wasn't meant to be factual anyway?
Rhetorical question with some :sarcasm: thrown in for effect.

10. I hope everyone realizes that it will be out on DVD Uncut.
Probably in stores within two weeks.

At Blockbuster this weekend I heard a little kid saying, "I want to see the 9/11 movie!" (he was refering to the "United 93")

The brainwashing has started. This is not over by far.

11. Did anyone notice that the CIA guys hood Usef for no reason
when they finally have him in custody? It was completely gratuitous. And more than that once, we're supposed to enjoy the mishandling of a prisoner. Incredible sadism in this film. Republican family values.

21. Did anybody watch this crap?
I suspect the film will play to the basic leanings of the view. The anti-Clinton guy will see it as a "see it is all Clinton's fault" while the pro-Clinton guy will see it as more Disney propaganda while a large segment just doesn't care.

26. Well, the message is now gone, but earlier
someone had posted that the film implied that Clinton sent in the cruise missile strike as a distraction. I thought the message was just the opposite. In that particular sequence. Clinton was portrayed as being reluctant to use force, for fear of being accused of “wagging the dog” during Monicagate. But he nevertheless decided to make a strike against Bin Laden when that particular opportunity arose: He did the principled thing, but the strike failed and hit a pharmecutical plant (?), and he was indeed accused of wagging the dog. I thought he did the principled thing but it just failed/backfired. And I don’t often credit him with being particularly driven by principle…..didn’t vote for him. There was plenty that showed him/them in a bad light, but not that strike IMO.
