War's Critics Abetting Terrorists, Cheney Says

By Michael Abramowitz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, September 11, 2006; Page A12

Vice President Cheney offered a veiled attack yesterday on critics of the administration's Iraq policy, saying the domestic debate over the war is emboldening adversaries who believe they can undermine the resolve of the American people.

"They can't beat us in a stand-up fight -- they never have -- but they're absolutely convinced they can break our will, the American people don't have the stomach for the fight," Cheney said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The vice president said U.S. allies in Afghanistan and Iraq "have doubts" the United States will finish the job there. "And those doubts are encouraged, obviously, when they see the kind of debate that we've had in the United States," he said. "Suggestions, for example, that we should withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq simply feed into that whole notion, validates the strategy of the terrorists."

Cheney unapologetically defended the 2003 invasion that toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, saying the administration would have done "exactly the same thing" even if it knew before the war what he acknowledged knowing now -- that Iraq did not have stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction. Yet he also gave a bit of ground, as he was pressed repeatedly by interviewer Tim Russert about statements that turned out to be wrong or damaging to his credibility.

and executed for their crimes against our republic.

My saying this is a sign for how much damage they have inflicted. Immense damage to our soldiers, Iraqis, our economy, our Constitution, Katrina victims, and on and on and on.

And I believe this even with reservations about the death penalty. The funny thing is... the only people who deserve the death penalty more than Bush/Cheney/Rums-failed/etc. is top al-Qaeda leadership and Saddam Hussein. May they all swing together on parallel ropes. They're all vicious criminals.

Edited on Mon Sep-11-06 05:33 AM by comtec
In the same we we DESPERATELY NEED Sadly Insane to be tried IN THE WORLD COURT in The Hague In the Netherlands!

IF These animals are killed w/o a trial, then we are totally FU@#ED!! They will use ANY violence against them as an excuse to destroy the republic as it stands, and make a real fascism/dictatorship! I hate them as much as you, really. But I thought this one through.. a lot, many years ago. We can't touch them and THEY KNOW IT!

You would have to take out around 20 people from his administration at once, including many gop heads (pun intended) and that's A) Not feasible, and B)Illegal.

Hell technically this conversation is potentially illegal, so lets stop it now B4 some Reich wing whack-off sees this and calls the NSA or some such stupidity.

It's a fun thought, but a dangerous reality. Best to keep on top of their BS and vote the fukrz out in November and IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH!!! Then turn the over to the world court for crimes against humanity. THAT is how you deal with this kinda scum!

With a top senator out of office they loose power.
This is one of the reasons we are BETTER OFF with Hillary STAYING in the senate!
That and the reality is a woman just can't win yet, not even Hillary.

Now.. Myself, I'm hoping for some really strong solar flairs...

Succession follows to the Vice President then to the Speaker of the House. So Hastert would be losing a Congresscritter and not a Senator.

10. Iran is trying to help these these idiots stay in power, Why?
Edited on Sun Sep-10-06 10:52 PM by teryang
Iran throws out a two month bone to the administration. This helps them and helps Cheney Bushco by postponing the deadline for confrontation till after the election. This administration doesn't want to make a move before then because it will quickly bring on economic and political disaster, and trouble in November. Meantime they can play off the 911 propaganda campaign and pretrend they're making progress in Iraq and Afghanistan, and whatever other small time gimmicks they have up their sleeves.

Iran knows that the corrupt corporate elites in this country do not want to commit resources to larger armed forces and war at this time, the dollar would go into a tailspin. Right now as I write the treasury note kiters and gold short sellers (the powers that be) who back the administration are loving the currency action. The oil and gold markets appear to be in a tailspin. The corporate elites are raking it in, maybe for the last time, while they are being played for suckers. This is a calculated move. For China its great, their currency is going up. their forex is going up, and the commodities they need are becoming cheaper. For Russia its a mixed bag but probably worth it in the end. Revenge is a dish better served cold. Is that how the saying goes?

If McCain or Kerry get their way in Iraq, Iran will have a big problem (so will we). If the repukes survive intact for 2006 in the Congress, this weak corrupt administration will gradually bleed the country white with a directionless, half hearted and assinine military posture, while building an unassailable trough against middle class rage.

Cheney ain't got his head screwed on right: he spent most of 2001 ooglin oil field maps with his oil exec buddies and plannin for the Iraq war, but couldn't be bothered to have an antiterrorism task force meetin; and shortly after the WTC attack, Cheney was beatin the drum for war with Iraq.

28. ..."they're absolutely convinced they can break our will"...
Well, Mr. Cheney, you're absolutely convinced WE can break THEIR will. But here's a little problem, there, DICKie...

WE are on THEIR soil. WE have the option of leaving, THEY do not. WE are there by choice, THEY are there by birth. WE are occupying THEIR country, THEY are not occupying OURS. Because of this, THEIR will, THEIR motivation, comes from an inheirently stronger position than OURS does.

WE can perhaps overcome their motivation IF actions had been done to prove that we are the 'good guys', but WE let THEIR country desend into chaos and anarchy and feudalism and sectarianism. For every one of OUR guys killed, forty of THEIR innocents are killed, many of them women and children, in those conditions that WE created.

And because of it, THEIR will is stronger than OUR will, and our advanced training and technology doesn't count for much. It didn't matter in Vietnam, either, when we killed about 50 Vietnamese for every GI killed.

54. Yes, we are abetting the terrorists.
Many of us Americans have noted the shady and mysterious ties between terrorists and the Republican Party: John Ashcroft's refusal to allow investigators to fully examine terrorist financing; the 9/11 terrorists wandering onto Jack Abramoff's boat (and the subsequent non-investigation); the fact that Poppy Bush and members of the bin Laden family were meeting in Washington on the day of the attacks; the fact that federal counterterrorism organizations in WTC-7 and the Pentagon were destroyed on that day, and the investigation into WTC-7 has been stymied; the fact that only two-dozen people had access to the Ft. Detrick anthrax stores, yet that investigation has stalled, too.

Every time the Republican Party winds up in political hot water, the terrorists who are at large thanks to those stalled investigations and bungled apprehensions come storming right back: Osama releases a tape, vaporous "warnings" are given without explanation, the New Number Two is captured somewhere if they're not outright lying about it. The revelations are displayed and presented almost like threats, threats directed squarely at the American people.

We, the American people, have been abetting these people, people who would politically profit from terrorism either by coincidence or by design. Either way, the one thing the Bush Administration has taught us is that any association with terrorists at all is just cause to brand the associated as terrorists themselves.

So yes, we are abetting the terrorists--and you, Dick, are the head terrorist in charge.

Okay, VP with the approval rating lower than Satan, here's the deal:

All you are saying is , "critics of this administration are hampering my ability to make more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more......."

We get it. So shut the fuck up. You are an evil piece of greedy, vile blubber. Nobody cares what you have to say.

58. War proponents such as Cheney have unwittingly created a poster child...
Edited on Mon Sep-11-06 08:01 AM by Zambero
...for terrorists the world over. What better propaganda tool than to exploit this administrations lies and phony justifications around a "pre-emptive" war that turns out to have been completely unnecessary? Saddam Hussein's regime had no links to terrorist groups prior to the U.S. invasion, but ironically enough our continued occupation and the resultant resentment on the part of the Arab world has turned out to be a rallying point and recruitment tool that far exceeded what Al-Quaida or any other terrorist group could have accomplished on their own. Thanks Mr. Cheney -- your administration's misguided actions have made the world a far more dangerous place, at a cost of several thousand American and Iraqi lives, losing ground to the Taliban in Afghanistan, and several hundred billion dollars squandered in Iraq that could have been better spent on port security and other homeland defenses.

No wonder the world hates us, they dont hate our "freedoms", they hate our leaders and our policies those leaders make.

"Vice President Cheney's influence over our nation's foreign policy and defense has made America less safe," said Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (Nev.). "The vice president was a chief architect of the effort to manipulate intelligence to build a case for invading Iraq; he ignored the threat of insurgencies, he took our eye off the ball in Afghanistan, and today he made clear that he would do nothing different."

Edited on Mon Sep-11-06 10:23 AM by LoZoccolo
The vice president said U.S. allies in Afghanistan and Iraq "have doubts" the United States will finish the job there. "And those doubts are encouraged, obviously, when they see the kind of debate that we've had in the United States," he said.

DANGIT WILL YOU PEOPLE STOP THIS DEBATING!

78. Interesting take on Cheney yesterday from, gulp, McLaughlin
He had the author of Fiasco on yesterday on PBS, and he said something to the effect of WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO CHENEY? Cheney was the guy who told Bush Sr. not to even THINK about going to Baghdad and taking out Saddam. He was the ultimate realist, the kind of guy who said, yeah, they're assholes, but we can do business with them. Then, out of nowhere, he turned into the biggest nation-building, foreign-entanglement dealer in the whole administration.

The only answer the two of them could come up with is that his heart problems scrambled his brains.

Here's a discussion of the show and book.
