Pelosi Statement on Fifth Anniversary of September 11 Attacks

9/10/2006 12:37:00 PM

To: National Desk

Contact: Brendan Daly or Jennifer Crider, 202-226-7616, both of the Office of House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the fifth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks:

"Five years ago, the terrorists attacked symbols of our economic and military strength; but what they failed to understand is that our true strength rests in our will and our unwavering commitment to America.

"On September 11 we grieve as a nation; we must also recognize there are many among us with their own personal tragedy to bear and whose grief knows no end. Today we remember the parents, spouses, and children who lost those they loved most. I hope that it offers some comfort to those who lost loved ones and those who were injured in the attacks that so many people in our country and throughout the world remember their loss and their suffering and continue to pray for them.

"Five years later, we have to continue to move forward with unity, urgency, and in the spirit of international cooperation, because we are not yet fully healed and not yet as safe as we should be. Therefore, we pledge again today: united as a country, we will seek to keep alive the indomitable American spirit that was displayed on September 11, and keep Americans safe from harm."

12. Go for the double play. Help remove Hastert from House completely.
Help out Jon Laesch. He's a young vet running for the House in IL14.

3. This crap is the worst there is.
Where is the challenge?
Where is the spine?
Where is the alternative reality?
Where is the fire of challenge?
Where is the rejection of this continual infantile internalization?

We, The People, ARE NOT Babies. I resent Pelosi speaking to 'us' as if we were.

5. Make no mistake!

My fondest hopes are that Pelosi will become Speaker Of The House. (third in line to the Presidency after W and cheney?)

However, I think the statement she offered is 'wimpy' at best.

If a 'woman' hopes to take that station, I hope she gets a better writer! I hope she gets some fire and speaks directly to the citizens rather than to some canned bullhockey.

Maybe Gore can help her?

16. Not like this she won't be.
When are they going to realize that they cannot out-Republican the Republicans? They need to exploit the weaknesses in the Right Wing's positions -- not try to jump on board with their strengths.

No wonder we are so fucked.

6. This moment (9/11 anniversary) is not the time for that.
Her statement is exactly what is appropriate at this time. Unfortunately, we don't have a President capable of making such statements.

In a few days, it will be time to for her and other dems to speak the way you want them to.

17. No, this is exactly the appropriate time to ask questions.
There is a sickness pervading the country when people are not allowed to ask questions. I'm sure someone will have another reason not to ask questions at another time. For example, after the U.S. invaded Iraq, it was too late to ask questions and questions then were hurting morale.

ASK THE QUESTIONS. Ask them now, tomorrow, tonight, next week, next month, in five minutes, in 3 hours . . .

7. She said exactly what I want to here our leaders say
The people of America still grieve and still want to comfort and care for those who's lives were so ultimately changed on the horrible day. Today I remember the loss and the grief, but I also remember the good seen that day in the spirit of Americans, especially those in the impacted areas. The people who worked so desperately to try and save lives, often resulting in the loss of thier own. That is the America that makes me proud. Today is not a day to blame or point fingers. It is a day to remember the best of our people on one of the worst of our days. No words of terror and bravado just soft words of rememberence and of a hope and a promise of a brighter future.

8. Oh. phooey
The American People don't want sentimental schmooze.

That's why the right-wing beat their collective chests for invading any country available.

A psychological shift is being made. Pelosi's mealy-mouthed statement reinforces the Bush bullshit. Pelosi should be shouting from the rooftops. That's what a "Leader" does. That's how a "leader" steers a nation. Instead she mealy-mouths sentimental Bush bullshit.

9. I disagree
Yelling and screaming on a day of rememberence is nto what I believe most americans want. Nor do they want to hear W yapping away about terrists and fear. I think people just want to put aside the politics for a day and simply take the time to quietly remember those lost on that day. You might call it sentimental schmooze, but I certainly don't.

Screaming on such a day would disgust people even more then watching W and his drugged out wife go around making photo ops at the 3 sites. I would bet the people of NYC would rather a quiet candle light vigil with talks by those who were directly effected about those who were directly effected rather then a presidential motorcade and a PR wreath laying.

If our Dem leaders came out making political partisan speeches today it would reflect badly on them as I believe it will relfect badly on the Repubs. They lack class, respect and compassion.

10. Yeah, the 'heroes' that worked that day to save lives
were being toxicology exterminated. Just like "our" soldiers in Iraq.

Let's see, the troops from Gulf War 1 have almost disappeared from their DU illnesses. The current troops are being rotated in a toxic environment that can't support human life or human reproduction. The U.S. has made Iraq incompatible with human existence.

You are arguing for "nice, nice" in a world of obvious extermination.

When CAN "we" start talking about such atrocities.?

You are arguing that that genocide be ignored because of a date?

Too bad the Dems won't say as much.

11. I disagree
she is showing herself to be a leader rather than a politician. A politician would seize the moment for party gain. She took the high road. There is plenty of time tomorrow for assertiveness.

Today is not a day for politics. It is a day to remember the humanity.

13. We all grieve over their unnecessary loss too.
Now where can we hear the other 365 leaders from everywhere around this planet, who speak (and will speak) for the hundreds of thousands who die (and will die) every single day of each year under the illegal aggressions of today's plutocrat terrorists using Depleted-Uranium, White Phosphorus, Cluster bombs, and Greenhouse-effect emissions?

Let's hope we can hear them before all life extinguishes.

14. I hate to rain on everybodys parade...
...but I am soooo burnt out on 9/11 this and 9/11 that... I am suffering from serious 9/11 fatigue, its time people just got over it and moved on with their lives. Chicken little politics have run their course. I dont need to "mourn" every year on 9/11.

18. Actually, it has become a new American religion, with its own holy sites,
its martyrs, and repeated rituals that occur every year on the day of the anniversiary.

19. if I wanted hogwash
I'd tune in to Cheney and Bush. Indomitable American spirit my foot.

How about exposing the history of dealings between the Bushes and the Bin Ladens, Ms Pelosi?

How about exposing Bush flying the Bin Ladens out of the country days after 911, Ms Pelosi?

How about exposing Bush ignoring the PDB on 8/6/1, Ms Pelosi?

21. If we want to lose the election...
keep repeating the phrase "speaker Pelosi". I have never heard anything from her that doesn't make me just yawn and want to shake her Louise Woodward style. There is so much material to attack Bush with, not that she should have done that today, but she NEVER makes a good case.
