U.S. officer found in capital of Kyrgyzstan with hair cut and dyed

Updated: 7 minutes ago
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - A U.S. Air Force major who went missing Tuesday in Kyrgystan was found after a telephone tip led authorities to her in the capital city, U.S. military officials told NBC News on Friday.

Jill Metzger, 33, was found with her hair cut and dyed and was “wandering around outdoors” near a police station in Bishkek, officials told NBC, speaking on condition of anonymity.

It was unclear whether Metzger was abducted against her will. No additional information about her condition was given.

Metzger had recently handed over her post as personnel officer at the Manas military base to her successor and was to return home in a matter of days, base spokeswoman Capt. Anna Carpenter said.

Metzger, a former resident of Henderson, N.C., was serving a four-month stint at the base with the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing. Her normal duty station is Moody Air Force Base in Georgia as a member of the 347th Mission Support Squadron.

2. Now why would she cut and dye her hair? She was due to
go home in a week or so and had been shopping for last minute gifts.
Found wandering around? I wonder if she was in shock, and really wonder
what happened to her.
I'm glad she was found.

3. Sounds like a Margaux Hemingway style breakdown...
I think it takes and extremely tough soul to whether that kind of war zone... I know I couldn't.

4. I think she was temporarily kidnapped. Where would she
cut and dye her hair? OK, speculating, but still...

Makes sense now. Except she's already married. Hardly.

Missing servicewoman was days from home, weeks from honeymoon

The Associated Press
RALEIGH, N.C.

The U.S. Air Force officer who disappeared in the Kyrgyz capital this week was days away from returning home and weeks away from her honeymoon, her family said Friday.

Maj. Jill Metzger, 33, was married in April, about a week before she was deployed to Kyrgyzstan. The homesick personnel officer was scheduled to land back at her Georgia base Friday.

"I should be speaking to her on the phone right now," her mother, Jeannette Metzger, said from her home in Henderson. "The last thing she told me was that she would call me the moment she stepped back onto American soil."

That final conversation was Sunday. The major's husband, Air Force Capt. Joshua Mayo, last spoke with her Monday. Military officials said Metzger, dressed in blue jeans and a sweater, vanished the following day during a shopping trip to a tourist hotspot in Bishkek, where she was searching for souvenirs to bring home to her family.
