Belgium police hold 17 in 'plot'

Seventeen people have been arrested in Belgium for allegedly planning
attacks aimed at "destabilising" the country's institutions, Belgian
prosecutors say.

Police raided army barracks and soldiers' homes across the country.

The raids were part of a two-year investigation into extreme-right
activists believed to be operating inside the military.

Those arrested were mainly "soldiers and people with an extreme-right
ideology who clearly express themselves through racism, xenophobia,
Holocaust denial, anti-Semitism and neo-Nazism", the federal prosecutor's
office said in a statement.

1. I find it hard to believe that 17 'nutcases' could "destabilise" the...
country's institutions. I'm not sure weapons (whatever they are) and a homemade bomb could destroy the Belgian government.

3. No, but it could cause the country to move further to the right
In the direction of shredding civil liberties in the name of "national security."

2. These Neo-Nazis will only get stronger because of the world situation
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 12:29 PM by Selatius
As long as the US keeps tossing gasoline on the fire, the Neo-Nazis will exploit the situation by arguing the problem is Arabs and Jews in Europe.

4. Hubby had an unpleasant experience with the Belgium Police...
Hubby is an Indian musician and diabetic. He was on a bus IN TRANSIT to a performance in Germany. Around midnight the bus was stopped by a stupid peon neonazi policeman. This pinhead looked at hubby's passport (it was Indian at the time) and started making a fuss because there was no visa for Belgium. Hubby said he was not going to Belgium but in transit to Germany. Another lady spoke up too, but skinhead did not listen and took Hubby to the detention center. So here was my mild mannered, diabetic musician hubby under arrest. He didn't arrive on the bus and everyone was in a panic because the concert was sold out and there was no musician.

Well, the day shift arrives and and they start making inquires as to why hubby in in there. The police chief listens to numb nut proudly tell how he 'caught' this suspicious person sneaking into the country. The Chief's face got redder as he flipped through Hubbies passport and saw stamps and visas from almost every country in the world.. He then asked Hubby what he did for a living and when Hubby told him his story, that he was over due in Germany, and oh by the way-as a diabetic-he needed to get something to eat because his blood sugar was bottoming out...the chief was purple with rage. He screamed at the deflated skin head policeman that he could NOT pull a traveler off the bus if they are in transit to another country. Your ticket is your pass through the country. This poor guy could file a complaint, sue us, AND WIN etc.

The story had a happy ending. The Chief called and contacted the folks in Germany. They provided Hubby with a hotel room to shower and rest, a meal and made arrangements for a charter plane to take him Germany in time for the concert. The police chief's chauffeur took him to the airport and personally put him on the plane.

We laugh about it now, but we are always happy when we get out of Belgium when we tour.
