Weldon: Commanders should control pullout

WASHINGTON, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- A powerful House Republican has drafted a resolution that would give military commanders the power to decide when U.S. troops should return from Iraq.

Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., the second-ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, told House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., that he plans to introduce the resolution soon, The Hill reported Thursday. The resolution would take the decision-making authority over troop withdrawals from U.S. President George Bush and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

Weldon, who serves as vice chairman of the Armed Services panel and chairman of the Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee, said the resolution "clearly says that the decision will be made by the commanding generals in the theater (of war). They're the ones we're paying to do the job. They know what the criteria are, they're the best to assess the readiness of the Iraqi brigades."

"(The commanders) determine the timetable for bringing the troops back home," Weldon told The Hill. "There's no armchair politician back here making those decisions, whether it's an elected member of Congress or even the secretary of the defense."

1. Only a republican can be so damned stupid.
The US president is COMMANDER IN CHIEF; that means he is the COMMANDER, the TOP BRASS, over the US MILITARY.

Now we know knig bush likes to think CiC means he's we the people's boss, but in fact, as always, king bush is incorrect.

However, king bush IS the COMMANDER of the MILITARY; this means the MILITARY COMMANDERS are UNDER BUSH'S command.

It is up to the CiC, the US president,as to when and if US troops do anything.

otherwise it's a military dictatorship and directly against the USC.

And that's a FACT.

And the guy's being a moron. Even fellow Republicans are saying so (with nicer words but to the same effect).

7. I wish.
WASHINGTON -- Democratic Senate candidate Sheldon Whitehouse has backed away from his call for a deadline to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq.
...
Whitehouse has since moved back toward the political center on the war issue, dropping his call for a specific deadline for pulling out the troops. In television and newspaper interviews over the last two weeks, Whitehouse has said military leaders should set the pace for a pullout, with "troop safety" as the key factor in their decision.

3. umm.. Bush has always said it is up to the commanders--He has passed
the responsibility to the commanders on the job (not his job as comm. in chief).

6. Yes bush is very good at bullshit; the commanders are UNDER BUSH'S
COMMAND.

So no, it's not up to HIS UNDERLINGS to decide anything.

But bush & his propagandists are damned good at fooling/duping/conning far too many Americans with this circular bullshit of his.

And bush has also said, LAST WEEK, that US troops are not leaving Iraq "so long as I'm the president".

He lies, he twists, he bullshits and he spins...and the stupid of America lap it up & swallow it whole. Especially the rightwing "media".
