Amputee Iraq veteran runs for office
By ELIZABETH DUNBAR, Associated Press Writer

PADUCAH, Ky. - When he lost both of his legs in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq, Robbie Doughty was no longer able to serve his country on the battlefield. But if things go his way this fall, he hopes to serve his community as an elected official.

Doughty is a candidate for county commissioner in western Kentucky's Marshall County. Though several Iraq veterans made headlines this year by running for Congress, a handful of others are also trying to enter public service by trying to win seats on city councils, county boards and in state legislatures.

The 31-year-old Doughty is trying to unseat the incumbent Democrat in the county where he grew up, not far from Fort Campbell, where his Green Beret unit was based.

"It's somewhat daunting, but it won't be any worse than being in combat in Iraq," Doughty said.

2. Who knows?? Maybe he is a "true believer"
That constant propaganda on AFR has to stick with some, no matter how much reality hits them. Wonder if this guy will support VA and equipment cuts for the troops?

3. While I don't approve of the party he chose
I say good for him for getting involved in the politcal process. I don't know enough about him to comment on him personally. Perhaps he's the kind of person the Republican party desparately needs, and it's not like they are trotting him out for national office. He's running locally.

9. Good post, says it like it is.
Sounds like a decent guy; the repugs need all the decent people they can get. It's in our best interests if that happens, too.

Peace.

10. I liked the guy in the article who is running for County Clerk
He decided to do so after he and several other soldiers in their units did not get their absentee ballots.

6. "I know Tammy Duckworth, and Mr. Doughty, you're no Tammy Duckworth."
Where's ol' Lloyd when you need him? R.I.P.

11. Can we say he got his self blown up and
he's no hero? Seems fair.

But I won't stoop that low. I'm just sorry the guy's a republican.

12. I think he's totally wrong...
but at least this is one right-wing war-supporter who was evidently prepared to suffer personally for his beliefs. Most of them want OTHER people to let themselves get blown up in the 'good cause', while they sit at a nice safe comfortable distance.
