Goss says the U.S. has an `excellent idea' of bin Laden's location

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Porter Goss of Sanibel, Fla., and U.S. Sen. Bob Graham of Florida were at the Capitol having breakfast together on Sept.11, 2001,when they learned two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center.

The two leaders of congressional intelligence committees - Goss in the House, Graham in the Senate - would oversee the investigation into what went wrong with the nation's security network.

Goss went on to become head of the CIA. Five years later, Goss offers his assessments of the impact of that day in wide-ranging conversations with the Orlando Sentinel's Mark Matthews.

...

Q: About a year ago you mentioned we had an "excellent idea" of the location of Osama bin Laden. Where do we stand now?

GOSS: We have an excellent idea of his location.

54. Pak offers 'peaceful' Osama a safe haven
Chidanand Rajghatta
7 Sep, 2006 0002hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK

WASHINGTON: ... The Pakistani suggestion that bin Laden, the world's most wanted terrorist, could be its untroubled guest came in course of an interview to ABC News by its spokesman Maj. Gen Shaukat Sultan.

If he is in Pakistan, bin Laden "would not be taken into custody," Major General Shaukat Sultan told ABC News in an interview, "as long as one is being like a peaceful citizen."

Sultan's comments came in the context of questions in the US about the withdrawal of Pakistani military from Waziristan under a deal with pro-Taliban militants, a development that has been greeted in the US media with headlines such as "Pakistan surrenders to Taliban."

US analysts, who unlike administration officials have been leery of Pakistan's commitment in the war on terror, are now questioning whether this means Islamabad is giving Taliban, al-Qaida, and Osama bin Laden a free pass in the region and what happens if the fugitives move there ...

16. This will be an interesting excercise.

The PR is aligning for a Bin Laden event. What kind of event? A failed capture attempt.

They won't actually capture Bin Laden, they will "fail" to capture Bin Laden. They will "come really really close" to capturing him. There will probably be some cooked up video to show on the idiot box, and most importantly, the reason they "fail" to capture him will somehow be the fault of everyone who criticises Bush.

Anyway, that's where I'm putting my money.

24. I think OBL is dead too. But he's a convenient boogeyman,
so this is kept classified top secret.

His death may be revealed at a time when the current administration really needs it. Even then, his remains may be found in the remnants of a fire, making it appear, without further investigation, that he died in the fire.

and is now running it?

REP. GOSS: It is true I was in CIA from approximately the late 50's to approximately the early 70's. And it's true I was a case officer, clandestine services office and yes I do understand the core mission of the business. I couldn't get a job with CIA today. I am not qualified. I don't have the language skills. I, you know, my language skills were romance languages and stuff. We're looking for Arabists today. I don't have the cultural background probably. And I certainly don't have the technical skills, uh, as my children remind me every day, "Dad you got to get better on your computer." Uh, so, the things that you need to have, I don't have.

44. We probably do know the general area where OBL is holed up
But, since the most likely place is in Pakistan, in an area where the central government is as welcome as is the ATF in the Idaho back woods, we face a situation with no good options.

If we ignore Pakistan's sovereignty and execute a capture/kill, their government likely would fall and be replaced by one ruled by islamic extremists - with the potential for them to share their nuclear arsenal with terrorists.

As much as I want OBL beheaded live on international TV, I'd pass that up to keep the nukes away from terrorists.

It's their strategic vision to keep him alive, I believe. They could have EASILY had him at Tora Bora. They want to keep some structure in Al Qaeada and not allow him to be a martyr. Also, he's an identifiable boogeyman and that works great in campaigning.

59. Porter and Goss were having breakfast with the Al-qaeda moneyman on 911.
Funny these articles always seem to omit that extraordinary tidbit.

In August 2001 Goss, Senator Bob Graham (D-Fl.), and Senator Jon Kyl visited Islamabad, Pakistan. Meetings were held with President Pervez Musharraf and with Pakistan's military and intelligence officials including the head of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) General Mahmoud Ahmad, as well as with the Afghan ambassador to Pakistan, Abdul Salam Zaeef. On the morning 11 September, 2001, Goss and Graham were having breakfast with General Ahmad.<2><3> Ahmad's network had ties to Osama bin Laden and directly funded, supported, and trained the Taliban

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porter_J._Goss#Intelligence_inquiry:_Sept._11.2C_2001

According to the FBI, Indian Intelligence and several press reports, the ISI Head was instrumental in providing financial support to the 9/11 terrorists. General Mahmoud Ahmad had allegedly ordered the transfer of $100.000 to the presumed 9/11 ring-leader Mohamed Atta.

On the morning of September 11, the three lawmakers Bob Graham, Porter Goss and Jon Kyl (who were part of the Congressional delegation to Pakistan) were having breakfast on Capitol Hill with General Ahmad, the alleged "money-man" (to use the FBI expression) behind the 9/11 hijackers. Also present at this meeting were Pakistan's ambassador to the U.S. Maleeha Lodhi and several members of the Senate and House Intelligence committees. This meeting was described by one press report as a "follow-up meeting" to that held in Pakistan in late August.

When the twin towers were attacked, General Mahmoud Ahmad, head of Pakistan's intelligence service, was, in Senator Graham's own words, "very empathetic, sympathetic to the people of the United States," (Stuart News Company Press Journal (Vero Beach, FL), September 12, 2001).

Bob Graham's description of the General Ahmad, contrasts with that of the Washington Post:

"On the morning of Sept. 11, Goss and Graham were having breakfast with a Pakistani general named Mahmud Ahmed - the soon-to-be-sacked head of Pakistan's intelligence service. Ahmed ran a spy agency notoriously close to Osama bin Laden and the Taliban." (Washington Post, 18 May 2002).
