Chicago Plans Voluntary Evacuation Drill Downtown
Exercise To Test Emergency Preparedness
Get breaking news alerts
(AP) CHICAGO City officials Tuesday announced the streets that will be affected during a voluntary evacuation drill for a section of downtown in order to better prepare city officials and residents in the event of a major emergency.

Mayor Richard Daley said the drill, which is scheduled to take place Thursday, is part of events and exercises the city has scheduled in conjunction with September being designated National Preparedness Month by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

City officials confirmed that starting at 9:30 a.m., Des Plaines Street will be closed between Madison and Adams Streets. The eastbound lanes of Madison -- from Halsted Street to Des Plaines -- will be closed, along with the Kennedy Expressway exit ramps at Monroe Street and Madison.

1. Um...why? Hurricane on Lake Michigan?
Having lived in that area for quite a few years, I can attest to the traffic nightmares on a GOOD day.. This sounds sort of boondoggle-ish to me, and a way to spend some money that could be spent better..

if you happen to live in a "target" area, and a "bad guy" wants to do something, an evacuation plan is not going to help much..

A hurricane gives plenty of notice, as do some other natural occurrences, but if this is a "terrrrrrah" effort, it;s not going to do much except to scare some people :(

3. Um These disaster type Terroistic events seem to coincide when
agencies are conducting *ahem* drills.

See 9/11 and Norad.

See the London bombings.

The 'drills' make for good deniability cover stories.

I'm just sayin....
