Convent-trained ex-rebel heads Nicaragua police

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (Reuters) - A former novice who gave up training to be a nun to fight in a leftist insurrection against a hated dictator was sworn in on Tuesday as Nicaragua's police chief.

Aminta Granera, who abandoned her training at a convent to join the Sandinista insurgents in the 1970s, said she would clean up the Central American nation's police force, which has been blighted by corruption in recent years.>>>>snip

Another woman, Sandinista commander Doris Tijerino, led the police during the leftists' government in the 1980s.
