Bin Laden Gets a Pass from Pakistan
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 07:47 PM by geek tragedy
http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/09/bin_laden_gets_.html

Osama bin Laden, America's most wanted man, will not face capture in Pakistan if he agrees to lead a "peaceful life," Pakistani officials tell ABC News.

If he is in Pakistan, bin Laden "would not be taken into custody," Major General Shaukat Sultan Khan told ABC News in a telephone interview, "as long as one is being like a peaceful citizen."

In addition to the pullout of Pakistani troops, the "peace agreement" between Pakistan and the Taliban also provides for the Pakistani army to return captured Taliban weapons and prisoners.

"What this means is that the Taliban and al Qaeda leadership have effectively carved out a sanctuary inside Pakistan," said ABC News consultant Richard Clarke, the former White House counter-terrorism director.

The agreement was signed on the same day President Bush said the United States was working with its allies "to deny terrorists the enclaves they seek to establish in ungoverned areas across the world."

You just can't beat the Bush junta for comic timing.

8. Tim Osman... of course, Pakistan is a very close ally in the GWOT
Behind us all the way. :eyes: The Taliban thing is not news, they've been the Taliban's chief supporters from day one, before the "students" took over Afghanistan. My only question is, do we now drop daisy cutters all over Pakistan?
(I in no way mean to suggest I think that's a good idea).

Another triumph of the Bush administration's foreign policy.

10. Hmmm.....
This might sound controversial, but I don't think Bin Laden should be of concern as he is not the real problem any more. He is more a spiritual leader than actually masterminding terrorists acts for the last five years. I would prefer that he be caputured alive than dead because that is exactly what he wants.

The real problem is ofcourse the foreign policy of this country.

11. This is a complex win-win deal for Pakistan
No one wants to die for Bush's follies! Here is the BBC account:

Pakistan 'Taleban' in peace deal

Pakistan has signed a deal with pro-Taleban militants on the Afghan border aimed at ending years of unrest.

The North Waziristan accord calls on tribesmen to expel foreign militants and end cross-border attacks in return for a reduced military presence.

Tens of thousands of Pakistani troops are fighting foreign Islamic militants and their local supporters in the country's restive tribal belt.

Hundreds of people have been killed in violence in North Waziristan this year.

The BBC's Barbara Plett in Islamabad says some observers believe the deal offers the government an exit from a military strategy that has largely failed.

Bin Laden Gets a Pass from Pakistan

September 05, 2006 5:41 PM

Brian Ross and Gretchen Peters Report:

Osama bin Laden, America's most wanted man, will not face capture in Pakistan if he agrees to lead a "peaceful life," Pakistani officials tell ABC News.

The surprising announcement comes as Pakistani army officials announced they were pulling their troops out of the North Waziristan region as part of a "peace deal" with the Taliban.

If he is in Pakistan, bin Laden "would not be taken into custody," Major General Shaukat Sultan Khan told ABC News in a telephone interview, "as long as one is being like a peaceful citizen."

...

The agreement was signed on the same day President Bush said the United States was working with its allies "to deny terrorists the enclaves they seek to establish in ungoverned areas across the world."

...

"They're throwing in the towel," said Alexis Debat, who is a Senior Fellow at the Nixon Center and an ABC News consultant. "They're giving al Qaeda and the Taliban a blank check and saying essentially make yourselves at home in the tribal areas," Debat said.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/09/bin_laden_gets_.html

Transcript:

GIBSON: it's an interesting peace agreement, here. And this can not be good news for the president. Just today in another speech outlining his plan for combating terrorism Mr. Bush said, and this is a quote, "We're working with friends and allies to deny the terrorists the enclaves they seek."

Martha Raddatz our chief White house correspondent is here and Martha, it would seem from what Brian here is reporting that the Taliban, and perhaps bin Ladin are getting just that, a safe-haven.

RADDATZ: Well it sounds like it Charlie, but the White House was very surprised by this news. I spoke to a spokesman just a short time ago, and he said we have to find out if the Pakistani government is really involved in this, really quite surprised as I said, especially on a day when the president gave such a strong speech about fighting terorrism.

Osama in Pakistan due to Pakistan's "sovereignty". Obviously this move makes Bush and his GOP Enablers look like total idiots.

27. Wait, I thought any countrey that harbored terrorists was as bad as the
terrorists themselves. But now Pakistan's sovereignty is a point of scruple? I've seen no evidence of scruples up to this point!

I had assumed OBL was still free due to simple incompetence - that is the simplest explanation with this crowd. But now I'm starting to wonder if maybe they're really is some collusion going on, too; this is looking awfully convenient.

This is perfect for the fear mongers - Cheney and Rumsfled leading the pact - and Georgie has no choice to play along. Mushareff and OBL teaming up - Islamic Facists with the bomb! WOW what could be better for the election of more war supportin' republicans!

29. Bush mentions Bin-Laden 16 times.
Regarding Bin-Laden: “So I don’t know where he is. You know, I just don’t spend that much time on him. … And, again, I don’t know where he is. I — I’ll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him.”
-- George W. Bush, 3/13/02

if bush isn't truly concerned about bin-laden then why did Bush mention Bin-Laden 16 times in yesterday's speech? Yeah - bush is pulling the boogeyman out of his hat.

Family friends and business partners forever. Wonder if OBL was a Skull and Bones member. So, our good ally Pakistan is still 'not harboring' terrorists, mind you.

28. Musharraf pinning his political hopes to Osama's star
Makes sense to me. The whole Osama "man-hunt" has been a fraud to this point, with neither Bush nor Musharraf wanting to catch him at all.

I'm not sure what Bush's response will be. Send troops into Pakistan FIVE years after he should have?

I suspect they'll just change his script to include fewer OBL quotes. After all, he's already "been marginalized".

The American sheeple are just SO FUCKING STUPID, it's shameful.
