FBI investigating Niger documents
THE FBI is investigating the documents that claimed to show Iraq was intent on buying uranium from Niger. Officials are working on the basis that the documents "tainted" other, reliable intelligence on Iraq’s weapons programmes, according to a report in the Washington Times.
The documents, which formed the basis of a sentence in the US president, George Bush’s, State of the Union speech, are widely believed to have come from the Italian intelligence service.
The reports that Iraq was trying to buy 500 tons of pure "yellowcake" uranium, emerged several months after Niger’s embassy in Rome was burgled and ransacked.
The FBI has sent agents to Italy and other countries to try and track down the source.
