Ahmadinejad seeks college teachers purge
TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Tuesday for a purge of liberal and secular teachers from the country's universities, urging students to return to 1980s-style radicalism.

"Today, students should shout at the president and ask why liberal and secular university lecturers are present in the universities," the official Islamic Republic News Agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying during a meeting with a group of students.

Ahmadinejad complained that reforms in the country's universities were difficult to accomplish and that the educational system had been affected by secularism for the last 150 years. But, he added: "Such a change has begun."

The president, in his role as head of the country's Council of Cultural Revolution, does have the authority to make such changes. But his comments Tuesday seemed designed more to encourage hard-line students to begin a pressure campaign on their own, thus forcing universities to oust the teachers.

It's also true that the rubber-stamp Iranian legislature is matched by the rubber-stamp US legislature, including the Brave Sir Robin Dems.

However, the US has a functioning and independent judiciary - Iran does not.

6. Sounds just like David Horowitz...
Lets do a little paraphrasing, shall we...

Conservative writer David Horowitz called Tuesday for a purge of liberal and secular teachers from the country's universities, urging students to return to 1980s-style Reaganism.

"Today, students should shout at the president and ask why liberal and secular university lecturers are present in the universities," Newsmax.com quoted Horowitz as saying during a meeting with a group of students.

Horowitz complained that reforms in the country's universities were difficult to accomplish and that the educational system had been affected by secularism for the last 40 years. But, he added: "Such a change has begun."

Horowitz,as founder of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture, does not have the authority to make such changes. But his good friend Lynne Cheney is the wife of the Vice President of the United States, and President Bush has also been known to lap up Horowitz's comments much like a thirsty dog does to a bowl of water. The comments seemed designed more to encourage chickenhawks and other brain-dead right wing mouthpieces to begin a pressure campaign on their own, thus forcing universities to oust the teachers.

50. The difference...
"The president, in his role as head of the country's Council of Cultural Revolution, does have the authority to make such changes. But his comments Tuesday seemed designed more to encourage hard-line students to begin a pressure campaign on their own, thus forcing universities to oust the teachers."

As opposed to your "rewrite: "Horowitz,as founder of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture, does not have the authority to make such changes. But his good friend Lynne Cheney is the wife of the Vice President of the United States, and President Bush has also been known to lap up Horowitz's comments much like a thirsty dog does to a bowl of water. The rest is speculation, much like the article itself.

17. This is almost funny
in a way that sometimes you have to see the absolute ridiculousness in real world events to deal with it at all.

So let's see in the post WWII years we fought the "Cold War" against the "Godless Commies" and reacted in part by hyping our "Godliness" - adding "In God We trust" on our money etc...

So now we're fighting religious extremists and Iran seems to be the poster child for them so when will we start hyping and Embracing our "Godlessness"?

Seriously though - what f'ing silliness. The right wingers have been crying for the same thing for years...let's just drop the pretense and start fighting over which end to crack a hard boiled egg already.

36. I agree they shouldn't have them but how do you suppose
that we should go about it?
We don't have the military might to move against them since we are tied down in Iraq. If we put economic sanctions on them they will retaliate and we will have the 1970's oil crisis again, and they will only become more isolated from the world. They also seem to be ignoring our diplomatic efforts. What really is our options with Iran?

37. Get Russia and China to pull their heads out of their
greedy asses and recognize the situation for what it is. They're pretty much the last two refusing to impose sanctions because of Iranian Oil that they've been so happy to suck up the last couple decades. We'll probably have to cut a trade/energy deal with them, but it would be worth it to avoid armed conflict with a country full of suicide bombers. I don't want sanctions either, but that's the more realistic choice.

51. Your post is complete nonsense. Very few countries favor sanctions
1. Russia does not buy Iranian oil.

2. Russia and China are not the last two refusing sanctions. Russia has said it is open to sanctions but they must not include force. China would have to be insane to approve sanctions against a friendly trade and security partner.

3. The only other countries who have so far spoken up in favour of possible sanctions are the US, UK, France and Germany. Germany would take a terrible hit, losing 10,000 jobs, so I doubt that they'll go along in the end.

4. I have seen no indication that trading partners like Italy, India, Pakistan, the other Stans or Japan support sanctions. So evidently you consider 5-6 countries to basically the whole world.

So as far as I can see, the following countries support sanctions:
US
UK
Israel
France
Germany
maybe Russia

The following countries have shown no indication of support for sanctions.
Afghanistan
Albania

43.  Ahmadinejad tells students to purge universities of liberal professors
The fiery Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, demanded yesterday that students denounce liberal professors, amid growing signals that a purge of regime opponents is gathering steam.

The radical leader told religious young people that he wanted to hear their anger.

"Students should shout at the president and ask why liberal and secular university lecturers are present in the universities," he said.

Employing the xenophobic rhetoric for which he has become renowned, Mr Ahmedinejad blamed outside powers for the problems in academia.
