Bush warns on foreign oil dependence

By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago

PINEY POINT, Md. -
President Bush said Monday the economy is growing steadily and jobs are plentiful, but America must work harder to break its dependency on foreign oil. Making a Labor Day appearance at Maryland's Paul Hall Center for Training and Education, which offers vocational training to Seafarer's International Union members, Bush said "dependence on foreign oil jeopardizes our ability to grow."

"Problem is, we get oil from some parts of the world and they simply don't like us," he said. "The more dependent we are on that type of energy, the less likely it will be that we are able to compete and so people can have good paying jobs."

Bush also said he is interested in new technology that advances that produce battery-operated cars and allows people to fuel their vehicles with ethanol, particularly in Farm Belt states. And he made a fresh push for greater development of nuclear energy.

.....

"... My message to the world is this: just treat us as we treat you," Bush said. "I believe we can compete with anybody, anytime, as long as the rules are fair."

do just about anything you want on this issue. And you do nothing but make it worse and oil company profits bigger.

Psychopathic liar.

The Republican leadership (and especially their oil company backers) are the primary reason for this situation that we are in now.

26. Geez. He's only been in office for five years.
In geological terms, five years is just the blink of an eye.

Give him some time.

3. "[J]ust treat us as we treat you" -------- NO!
I don't want to have freedom rained down on me in the form of cluster bombs.

I don't want to shuffle across a landscape polluted with Depleted Uranium.

I don't want to have the military breaking down my door in search of terrorists.

7. but he did talk of tax cuts again. He will be after Congress to make them
permanant

Bush again called on Congress to make permanent a host of tax cuts, saying "I like it when people working for a living have more after-tax money in their pocket."

He said people in all walks of life should work hard to ensure that "our workers have the skills necessary to compete in the 21st Century."

Bush made a brief mention on the war and terrorism issue, thanking America's fighting men and women for their sacrifices and saying, "They may hear all the political discourse going on, but the people of this country — the people of the United States of America — stand squarely behind the men and women who wear our uniform."

Well, it started out as after tax, but it vanished when the after-deficit was figured in!

6. My message to President Bush
Treat the world how you want to be treated.

Invading a soverign nation based on lies is nt a good start.
Nor is holding prisoners indefinately without judicial recourse.
Nor is torture.
Nor is collective punishement.

Try upholding your own constitution for a change.
And also upholding treaties signed in good faith with other nations - not just as long as you feel like it - re geneva gonventions and the free trade agreement with Canada - re softwood lumber.

12. Keep Alaska's oil in the domestic market
Instead of allowing big oil to sell Alaska petroleum to the Asian market, how about keeping it on the domestic market? Have Exxon, Chevron and BP made enough money in the last couple of quarters such that they can afford to take slightly lower profits? Where's their sacrifice in this war, Mr. Bush?

14. Why don't you
STOP flying the fucking 747 around the country capaigning for your cronies. You know in addition to his 747, whenever the President goes somewhere to speak one or two C-130 (large 4 engine cargo planes) must fly there before him with his fleet of cars. You cannot imagine how much fuel that uses.

22. between the lines: more exploration & drilling in/around North America
Edited on Mon Sep-04-06 03:24 PM by 0rganism
This is to be used as a lever to pry federal protections off the various recognized national wilderness areas and loosen regulation on nuclear plants. Make no mistake, the "alternative energy" angle is at best a distraction, and almost certainly a backchannel for additional grants to bush pioneers in the energy industry, while the real goal has been quite clear from the beginning.

Meanwhile, bush's speech serves as an apologetic for high energy costs, and paves the way for even more record-setting corporate profits at the public's expense.

"Don't like the $3 gas prices? Blame the rest of the world for not liking us."

25. I'm kind of surprised that it's the only one I've seen at DU
I guess some might consider it sacriligeous, but I think of it as doing my part for the complex. If I had more time to do video editing, LM would be showing up in all kinds of news conferences and photos...

I'd like to see a remix of one of shrub's press "conferences" where his face gets replaced with that image about 30 seconds in and then his responses are overdubbed with honest answers to what passes for questions these days. Like in the Intercepter/Decoy episodes.
